Job Title: Heavy Equipment Safety SpecialistDepartment: Risk and Safety FLSA Status: Exempt Reports to: Director of Facilities & Risk Supervises: None Location: Field Based (across all EGNW locations) Pay Range: $85, 000 to $100, 000 (DOE)About the Position The Heavy Equipment & Safety Specialist will oversee Evergreen Goodwill of Northwest Washington's (EGNW) heavy equipment program, ensuring safe operation, preventative maintenance, vendor management, and compliance with safety standards. This role is dedicated to reducing emergency repairs, minimizing downtime, improving equipment life, and ensuring safer working environments for staff.
The position will serve as the organizational owner for all heavy equipment, from acquisition to disposition, consolidating vendor relationships, managing leases, and providing staff training on equipment use and cleanliness standards. This is a field based position that will travel across all EGNW locations, with emphasis on the Everett Outlet, Seattle Outlet, and Georgetown Facility sites.Essential Functions and Responsibilities - Serve as the single point of contact for all heavy equipment (forklifts, balers, pallet jacks, tippers, stackers, tilters, compactors).
- Develop and implement a preventative maintenance (PM) program to reduce emergency breakdowns.
- Conduct regular site inspections (3-4 days in the field per week) to monitor equipment condition, facility cleanliness, and compliance with safety protocols.
- Coordinate equipment leasing, repairs, and replacements across all sites; consolidate vendor contracts to improve pricing and service levels.
- Train managers and staff on proper use, cleanliness standards, and operator safety protocols.
- Maintain records of leases, repairs, and maintenance schedules; ensure equipment lifecycle is tracked accurately.
- Oversee LOTO (Lockout/Tagout) audits and compliance, with a goal of zero violations.
- Investigate and report incidents or near-misses; recommend corrective actions.
- Collaborate with Facilities, Transportation, and Safety teams to ensure consistent communication and ownership of heavy equipment management.
- Benchmark and adopt best practices to continuously improve cost savings and safety outcomes.
Required Education and Experience: - 3-5 years of experience managing heavy equipment operations, maintenance, or safety programs.
- Strong knowledge of OSHA and L& I safety regulations, particularly around powered industrial trucks and balers.
- Experience with preventative maintenance scheduling and vendor coordination.
- Ability to analyze cost data and create ROI-based recommendations.
- Excellent communication, training, and vendor negotiation skills.
Preferred: - Experience in nonprofit, retail, or industrial environments with high equipment usage.
- Familiarity with LOTO procedures and audit practices.
- Background in facilities or risk/safety program management.
Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations: - Must have valid Washington Driver's license and proof of insurance along with good driving record.
- Must have reliable transportation as this position requires travel to various locations and offsite meetings.
Computer/Technology Skills: - Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)
- Ability to learn new technology and software as related to the job.
Physical Abilities While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required sit for long periods of time, communicate with other employees by talking and hearing, required to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds and to operate computer systems. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Able to communicate with others effectively both verbally and written, including those who have limited English skills.
