The Translational ADME Biotransformation team in Beerse, Belgium, is looking for a highly motivated Senior Scientist to support drug discovery and development programs. The team is part of the department of Translational Pharmacokinetics/Pharmacodynamics and Investigative Toxicology (TPPIT) and plays a pivotal role in support of drug metabolism related studies for small and large molecule drug discovery and development programs as well as in developing and applying advanced analytical chemistry solutions to solve mechanistic questions. The candidate will be responsible for Mass Spectrometry Imaging support and provide advanced analytical support in ad hoc mechanistic studies and contribute to project progression and decision making by providing high quality data and expert opinion to multi-disciplinary project teams.

As part of the global Translational ADME community within TPPIT, you will have access to a large arsenal of in silico, in vitro, in vivo and analytical tools and the vast expertise of colleagues at our various research sites in Belgium and the United States.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and execution of advanced analytical chemistry experiments, primarily involving mass spectrometry, interpret the data and write high-quality reports, all aimed at improving our success in bringing differentiated medicines to patients.
  • To perform biological imaging using MALDI or DESI in combination with high resolution or triple quadrupole mass spectrometry, including room temperature and cryogenic sample preparation methods.
  • To perform laser microdissections to pinpoint and isolate distinct subcellular components for detailed molecular assessment. Use advanced 2D-liquid chromatography – mass spectrometry setups to enable the qualitative and quantitative measurements of low analyte concentrations in these sections.
  • Maximize the output from raw data using appropriate software and statistical analysis tools.
  • Collaborate within multidisciplinary teams to contextualize data within broader research objectives, propose and develop follow-up experiments, and document and present findings.
  • Stay updated on advancements in mass spectrometry and related technologies. Implement new technologies and methods to enhance sensitivity, quality and throughput for accelerating research and improving scientific data quality.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Analytical or Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biochemistry, or related field or a master’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or related field with 10 years of relevant experience
  • > 5 years hands-on experience with high-resolution mass spectrometry for imaging, quantification or structure elucidation
  • Advanced hands-on experience in small molecule, oligonucleotide analysis, protein analysis, 2D-chromatography, in a Pharma R& D environment or as a post-doc are assets
  • Knowledge of biotransformation reactions and enzymes involved are assets
  • Proficiency in data analysis software and ability to interpret complex datasets
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the capacity to independently diagnose and tackle complex technical and scientific problems
  • Strong track record of scientific contributions including peer reviewed publications, patents, or presentations at major meetings is considered a plus
  • High level of flexibility, creativity and sense of responsibility
  • Team player with strong interpersonal skills in an international team setting
  • Strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal
