Johnson & Johnson is recruiting for a Senior Scientist in the field of biomacromolecular crystallization, at the Crystallization Technology Unit (CTU), located in Beerse, Belgium.

As a Senior Scientist, you will lead the development of crystallization processes targeted at biomacromolecules, that will be directly used in our chemical manufacturing plants. You will become part of a dynamic team of crystallization experts that support the whole Johnson & Johnson portfolio of synthetic Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). In this role, you will collaborate closely with multi-functional teams to identify and select the most effective processes, ensuring the final API properties meet our high standards. We are seeking a motivated and dynamic crystallization specialist in macromolecules who is passionate about advancing innovative therapeutic modalities. Join us and play a key role in shaping the future of ground breaking medicines!

Key responsibilities:

  • Take responsibility for the development of the crystallization process and the downstream processing of the final API in multiple projects in the portfolio. Be involved from laboratory up to plant scale to address arising problems and guarantee on-time delivery of the final API.

  • Broaden the knowledge base on crystallization and downstream processes in the manufacturing of biomacromolecules (e.g. peptides, oligonucleotides) and small molecules.

  • Independently conceptualize and conduct advanced experimental studies to gain mechanistic insights and develop a scalable crystallization process that meets API specifications (polymorph, particle properties, purity, etc.)

  • Evaluate crystallization kinetics and thermodynamics to support and/or perform process modelling and design.

  • Capture, analyze, and interpret data from various sources: PAT data, offline analytical data (UPLC, XRD, DSC, Laser Diffraction, etc.)

  • Evaluate downstream processing steps: isolation, drying, and milling.

  • Work with a diverse group of collaborators including R& D chemists, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Drug Product Development, and API manufacturing plants.

  • Stay updated on scientific and technical advancements in crystallization techniques through external collaborations and academia.

What is in it for you

  • Contributing to the discovery of a medical breakthrough and a world without disease

  • Being part of the Center of Excellence in crystallization at the Beerse site of J& J, working alongside motivated and experienced crystallization process development team (ca. 15 people) in an innovative working environment.

  • Access to innovative facilities, including advanced PAT equipment and skilled experts.

  • Through mentoring programs, e-university, and on-the-job training, we ensure your personal development in a global company.

  • A competitive salary, on-site sport accommodations, health/energy programs, and other benefits for you and your family

  • Flexible working hours (40 h/week), no fixed holiday planning, and the possibility to work at home for non-laboratory related tasks.

  • A work environment that embraces diversity and open to any individual with a scientifically driven and practical entrepreneurial mind set

Qualifications

  • Education or relevant research experience in the field of crystallization, preferably in macromolecular crystallization. Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, physics, or equivalent industrial experience.

Experience and Skills

Required:

  • Hands-on experience with conducting accurate data-rich lab experiments

  • Experience in crystallization and/or isolation of biomacromolecules (proteins, peptides etc.)

  • Experience with high-throughput experimentation

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in English

  • Ability to cooperate in a dynamic team environment! Proven capability to communicate effectively with collaborators from different groups and work together with diverse project teams to develop optimal processes.

  • Strong scientific knowledge in crystallization fundamentals

Preferred:

  • Industrial experience in crystallization, precipitation / isolation or synthesis of biomacromolecules (proteins, peptides, oligonucleotides).

  • Experience with process scale-up and/or technology transfer, moving from laboratory to pilot plant or production scale.

  • Familiarity with either:

  • Crystallizability screening,

  • Phase diagram construction: API solid state screening and selection,

  • Design of Experiments methodology,

  • Downstream processing steps: isolation, milling, and drying
