Job Description:

Johnson & Johnson is recruiting for a Principal Process Engineer within the Manufacturing Science and Technology (MSAT) team located in Geel, Belgium.

The chemical production facility in Geel is part of the Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicines Supply Chain organization and is the largest manufacturer of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and spray dried powders (SDP) within the network and our API Launch and Grow site. The APIs/SDPs we manufacture are sent for further processing through pharmaceutical production into tablets, ointments, syrups, and other formulations, which are distributed to our patients around the globe.

The Principal Process Engineer will be a senior member of the MSAT Synthetics Drug Substance Value Optimizer team who support the ongoing production of our commercial Life Cycle Management (LCM) API portfolio. They will represent MSAT in site-based and global cross-functional teams, working closely with our partners to ensure smooth API production while embedding safety, quality, and sustainability practices. Primary focus: Leading scientific and data-driven process intensification opportunities for the LCM API portfolio and new APIs (NPI), including unit operation optimizations, sustainability initiatives, equipment utilization / plant capacity optimizations, and new technology introductions. They will also be the key expert for the synthesis of several APIs responsible for pre-manufacturing readiness and supporting daily production. This will be a vital role in driving process excellence and sustainability at our site, directly impacting our ability to deliver high-quality medicines to our patients efficiently and reliably.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify and implement API manufacturing process optimizations e.g. yield improvements, cycle time reduction, de-bottlenecking, etc.
  • Apply process modelling / digital twins, advanced data-driven methodologies (e.g., multivariate analysis, data analytics, AI/ML technology etc.), and process analytical technologies (PAT) to facilitate improved process understanding.
  • Collaborate at site level, and with global technology, data, development, and regulatory functions to design solutions for optimized syntheses.
  • Become an authority on process sustainability to reduce our environmental footprint whilst optimizing process cost.
  • Lead as Local Process Owner for solvent recycling to increase solvent circularity compliance maturity and to be the key spokesperson for this area in health authority and customer audits.
  • Guide process engineers and multifunctional teams of experts on process intensification and sustainability.
  • Support the evaluation and implementation of new process technologies.
  • Partner with the Operations, Quality, and Planning departments for daily operational support of API drug substance synthesis (e.g. campaign preparation, resolution of non-conformances, CAPA implementation, production follow up, etc.).
  • Lead complex process investigations or product related technical issues.
  • Lead internal and external technology transfers.
  • Monitor process and product performance (Continuous Process Verification, Product Quality Reviews).
  • Contribute, review, and approve technical documentation.
  • Technical support in partnership with Quality in regulatory audits and inspections.

Qualifications:

  • · Master’s Degree or PhD preferably in Chemical engineering or Process technology (bioengineering, industrial engineering or chemistry), or proven record in an industrial, operational environment.
  • Multiple years of professional experience preferably in API manufacturing or process development.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas related to API manufacturing: organic chemistry, reaction engineering, distillation, liquid-liquid extraction, solid-liquid separation, drying.
  • Knowledge or strong interest in one or more of the following areas is an asset: process modelling, process analytical technology (PAT), data analytics, multivariate analysis, AI/ML, lean manufacturing, process excellence.
  • Awareness of API manufacturing site systems and procedures (SAP, complaint handling, change control, qualification, process validation, etc.).
  • Good project management, planning, and coordination skills.
  • Motivated, able to work independently and take decisions autonomously, with demonstrated problem solving skills and results driven personality.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to influence and handle conflicting interests.
  • Strong analytical skills with a high level of accuracy.
  • Able to establish close collaborations with internal and external business partners.
  • Working knowledge of English (both verbally and written) and Dutch (or willing to develop proficiency in Dutch).
