Description:

The Missons, Concepts and Capabilities (MCC) division of Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) is looking for a talented Structural Engineer. This position provides operational, research and development, and training support along with subject matter expert advice and decision support to the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) as part of its 24/7/365 Technical Reachback Support program. The ideal candidate will apply subject matter expertise and problem-solving skills to develop, integrate, test, verify, validate, and apply CBRNE software/scenarios based on experiments and predicted phenomena using theoretical and computational methods. The successful candidate will provide general knowledge and subject matter expertise as a Structural Engineer in support of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA). Each Technical Reachback team member is cross trained on all models and undergoes a rigorous certification process on the use of our CBRNE models before becoming an active member of the Reachback team. In addition, this position re the use of models in all areas of CBRNE tasks also include the presentation of modeling results and decision support aids to both internal and external customers in the form of written reports and oral presentations.

Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing current research in various and potentially diverse subject areas for familiarity and relevance
  • Providing general knowledge and structural engineering-related subject matter expertise to government agencies and first responders
  • Assisting in the development of program plans, timelines, and technical documents
  • Attending technical and programmatic meetings in which you coordinate responses from scientific community members and review the assembled materials for technical accuracy, consistency, and completeness.
  • Willingness to be cross-trained to provide modeling and information across the CBRNE spectrum.

Required Qualifications:

  • MS in Structural/Civil Engineering or a related field with 6 - 8 years of experience. BS plus Professional Engineering (PE) license would be considered in lieu of a MS
  • Willing and able to work rotating shifts
  • Must be a US Citizen
  • Hands on experience using computer-based software to develop structurally sound and comprehensive models that account for all structural components
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a US DoD TS/SCI security clearance
  • Strong communication skills, both orally and verbally, technical presentation, teamwork mentality, graphic visualization and Microsoft Office proficiency skills are required
  • Proficient in reviewing and interpreting building blueprints to extract structural specifications for integration into modeling programs

Desired Qualifications:

  • Active US DoD Secret or Top Secret clearance
  • Experience working with organizations within the DTRA or the DoD as well as other government agencies
  • Experience in Combating WMD threats or CBRN threats (primarily through modeling and simulation and/or test experience)
  • Knowledge of blast effects on structures
  • Proficient in reviewing and interpreting HVAC/mechanical drawings and schedules
  • Proficiency with Python scripting and GUI development
