If you have a bachelor's degree along with eight plus years of experience in product and/or process development, particularly in the early stages of technology development, we want to speak with you! We are currently seeking a Principal Process Technology Engineer I, Central Engineering - Corporate RD& E in Richmond, VA. This person will be adept in applying fundamental principles of product and process engineering science to assess, demonstrate, and build applied technological knowledge rooted in and aligned with the consumer-focused jobs to be done framework. They will collaboratively and directly enable new capability for the Innovative Product Development (IPD) vertical teams to improve Altria's innovation pipeline. Position will be based at the Center for Research & Technology, in Richmond, VA with a hybrid work arrangement.
What you will be doing:
  • Researching and testing new technologies or using existing technologies in innovative ways to assess feasibility, identify challenges and advantages, and set expectations.
  • Evaluating and directing or collaborating with external partners in technology proof of concept projects and/or to augment and improve internal capabilities
  • Advancing and using process analytical technologies (PAT) applications to improve the capabilities for rapid characterization of flavors, encapsulation, stability, composition, or other critical properties and attributes for use in all innovation stages and across IPD vertical teams
  • Providing technical expertise and guidance to IPD vertical teams, and translating their needs to identify, deliver, enhance, and/or expand capability for efficient prototyping and characterization at various scales to increase speed, efficiency, and effectiveness.
  • Using best practices of experimental design and quality by design principles to generate robust data sets that enable modeling and simulation for products and processes across a range of predictive use cases
  • Staying up-to-date with own and other industry trends and advancements to inform and inspire new ideas and projects.
We want you to have:
  • Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering preferred or a related field, with 8+ years of experience in product and/or process development, particularly in the early stages of technology development within a CPG company.
  • Experience working in interdisciplinary teams and collaborating effectively with colleagues from diverse technical backgrounds and across organizational and functional boundaries.
  • Propensity towards accepting ambiguity, abstract thinking and intelligent risk taking in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to understand and translate general consumer requirements into technical descriptions to seek and test solutions.
  • Experience accepting, identifying, and investing in external partnerships to improve speed, efficiency, and effective solutions and capture of knowledge
  • Demonstrated ability to independently conceive, lead, and complete multiple projects or research studies, with the ability to anticipate risks and find opportunities to test and learn.
  • Tenacious pursuit of innovation by testing new ideas quickly, sharing findings, and iterating to improve outcomes.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly and concisely.
  • Proficiency in key, fundamental areas of product/process engineering science desired:
    • Thermodynamic phase equilibrium, transport driving forces, and material interfaces/interactions
    • Transport phenomena and relevant relationships (mass, momentum, and heat and application at various scales of interest relevant to a problem)
    • Processing methods, material properties, and structure and the knowledge of their relationships
    • Process unit operations, fundamental operating principles, and relevant equipment classes typical in tobacco, food/confectionary, and pharmaceutical industries
    • Process analytical technology and its application and uses at different stages of innovation or design & development (basic understanding of measurement attributes and applications, off/at/on/in-line application, spectroscopy and reference methods)
