JOB OVERVIEW:

Under general supervision of the WIC Director or their designee, provides guidance, support and information on breastfeeding, to pregnant and lactating WIC participants through phone calls, text messaging, emails and face to face in an office setting. Manages and participates in WIC outreach to the community. Balances peer counseling, community outreach, and front desk office work. Will occasionally work evening and weekend days. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Follows the current state and national peer counseling training principles

Provides guidance, support, and up to date information on breastfeeding and infant feeding to pregnant and lactating WIC participants.

Demonstrates breastfeeding competence.

Promotion of breastfeeding through special projects and duties as assigned.

Contacts WIC participants at targeted times during pregnancy and the first few months of breastfeeding using, phone calls, emails, texts, or mail.

Provides appropriate anticipatory guidance to prevent the occurrence of breastfeeding problems.

Refers advance problems to a trained Designated Breastfeeding Expert/Breastfeeding Coordinator.

Keeps accurate records of all contacts made.

Works with the Breastfeeding Coordinator to plan the annual breastfeeding fair.

Provide excellent customer service to participants, co-workers and supervisors.

Verifies proof of income, residency and identification for WIC certification.

Completes lab measurements including weight, height, length, head circumference, and hemoglobin.

Answers phones and text messages. Schedules appointments and answers general WIC questions.

Schedules, organizes and attends outreach activities.

Collaborates with partner organizations to share resources and facilitate interagency referrals.

Prioritize and organize a diverse workload with competing deadlines and expectations.

Adapt to shifting priorities and new demands with flexibility.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Education: High school graduation or equivalent.

Experience: Familiar with common problems encountered by breastfeeding women. At least one year of experience as an Office Specialist, WIC office preferred. Three years of increasingly responsible experience in clerical work. Work experience must be appropriate to the position to be filled.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA):

Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of techniques for effective supervision; considerable knowledge of budget preparation and monitoring, program auditing and evaluation.

Skills: Typing at least 40 wpm. Must have good time management skills, and the ability to balance multiple roles and projects. Strong self-management and the ability to maintain focus across different task types.

Abilities: Ability to perform complex clerical work requiring moderate exercise of independent judgment. Ability to effectively use general office equipment. Ability to make mathematical computations rapidly and accurately. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Bilingual Spanish/English preferred. Competent to provide breastfeeding advice and information to WIC participants. Enthusiasm about breastfeeding and desire to share that enthusiasm.
