Description:

At Big West Oil, our Project Engineers are crucial to our success. We're looking for an experienced Project engineer to join our team, focusing on the execution of capital projects with a specific emphasis on Electrical and Instrumentation (E& I). You'll be fully integrated with operations, maintenance, and reliability teams, taking ownership of projects from start to finish and making a direct impact on the safety and efficiency of our refinery. This is a chance to be a key player in ensuring the safe, compliant, and reliable operation of our refinery, working alongside operations, maintenance, and technical experts.

As a Project Engineer, you will be responsible for the successful execution of sustaining capital projects in your unit. Your expertise will be critical in assisting with long-term capital project planning related to enterprise-wide system upgrades. This includes supporting turnaround execution with timely and accurate engineering of repair plans for discovery work. You will act as an interface between operations, maintenance, and inspection groups, participate in task forces and incident investigations, and drive disciplined adherence to the company’s management of change process.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and provide project engineering support for the Capital Projects Department, as well as act as an in-house SME on electrical and instrumentation systems.
  • Verify and finalize components of engineering work packages, including specialty items, tie-in lists, line lists, and related isometrics.
  • Work with the inspections department to generate and resolve identified issues related to fixed equipment and electrical, and instrumentation systems.
  • Generate and complete Management of Change (MOCs) for assigned projects. Maintain current and accurate process safety information for MOCs on their unit.
  • Support construction activities, including troubleshooting issues as they occur in the field.
  • Support turnaround activities as they occur, with a focus on E& I discovery and repair work, but not limited to E& I.
  • Participate in related task forces and incident investigations as required, such as PHA action item resolutions, collaborating interdepartmentally and with contractors as needed.
  • Responsible for managing projects with a wide range of capital levels from micro projects ($200, 000) to large/mega ($20M).
  • Good technical knowledge about DCS/PLC controls and field instruments, Electrical MCC, transformers, PDC, and major equipment for managing instrumentation and electrical-driven projects.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited university or college in engineering.
  • Five or more years of experience as a Project Engineer.
  • The ability to generate hand-drawn field sketches, Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P& IDs), and a general knowledge of AutoCAD or equivalent is desirable.
  • Must be willing to work in the field, including being able to climb ladders and stairs, work at elevated heights using fall protection equipment, and be able to enter confined spaces using a respirator.
  • Strong Knowledge of ASME and API piping and pressure vessel codes is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of project management, front-end engineering, project planning, and scheduling is critical to the role.

Preferred Candidates May Possess the Following:

  • Experience in Electrical and Instrumentation (E& I) projects will be highly preferred.
  • Hold an engineering degree in the field of Electrical, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience working in refineries, petrochemicals, or other relevant petrochemical industries is desirable.
  • Knowledge of API and NFPA and standards related to electrical reliability is preferred e.g., NFPA 70E, NECA code book, and ISA Instrumentation standards, Hazardous Area Classification Class 1 Div 1 & 2.
