The Training Specialist is a pivotal member of the research support team, responsible for designing and delivering training that upholds the highest standards of animal welfare, regulatory compliance, and scientific rigor. This role ensures that all personnel from animal care technicians to principal investigators are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the components of their jobs ethically, safely, and effectively.

Working closely with veterinarians, IACUC administrators, and research staff, the Training Specialist develops curricula that cover species-specific handling techniques and necessary procedures for a variety of protocols. The position also plays a key role in conducting refresher courses and preparing teams for regulatory inspections and AAALAC accreditation.

Beyond technical instruction, the Training Specialist fosters a culture of compassion, accountability, and continuous learning. They serve as a resource for troubleshooting procedural challenges, interpreting policy updates, and integrating new technologies or methodologies into training workflows. Success in this role requires a blend of scientific expertise, instructional design, and interpersonal finesse.

Position Summary:

Organizes and instructs non-technical classes in vocational, professional, or scientific topics and presents specialized training.

Position Key Accountabilities:

Instructs employees in various vocational skills to assist the employees to obtain their career objectives.

Develops and coordinates the training programs, manuals, programs, and materials to assure a high quality of instruction.

Assists department representatives in determining training needs.

Prepares all advertising for training classes or seminars to assure awareness and participation for the assigned area.

May be responsible for orientation of new employees.

Other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

Excellent communication skills.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor's degree in a related field or experience in lieu of education.

Minimum Experience:

One year of experience. May substitute required experience with equivalent years of education beyond the minimum education requirement.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
