Position Summary:

UTHealth is seeking an entry-level Training Specialist to join our Surgical Skills Center and support standardized patient (SP) teaching and assessment activities for healthcare professionals. This role provides administrative and technical expertise in organizing, developing, and implementing SP programs, including creating and editing training manuals, developing instructional materials, and conducting training sessions. The Training Specialist will monitor and document Standardized Patient performance, provide regular feedback, and collaborate with faculty and physicians to ensure program goals are met. Responsibilities also include organizing and instructing non-technical classes on vocational, professional, or scientific topics, with a primary focus on guiding SPs in basic clinical skills such as blood pressure readings, anatomy, and other foundational techniques. Ideal candidates will demonstrate strong teaching skills, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and communicate effectively with both faculty and staff. Prior experience as a standardized patient is a plus.

This is a Full-time role that will work in the heart of the Texas Medical Center in our Surgical Skills Center. It is classified as salaried but non-exempt. Position Key Accountabilities:
  • Train standardized patients (SPs) and prepare them for teaching and assessment activities.
  • Develop training materials for SPs.
  • Assist in program quality improvement initiatives.
  • Assists department representatives in determining training needs.
  • Assist in recruiting and interviewing SPs for sessions.
  • Assist in administrative duties for the program.
  • Participate in research and scholarly activities that involve standardized patient use with UTHealth faculty and other institutions.
  • May be responsible for the orientation of new employees.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Minimum Education:

    Bachelor's Degree in a related field required. May substitute required education with equivalent years of experience beyond the minimum experience requirement.

    1 year of experience required. May substitute required experience with equivalent years of education beyond the minimum education requirement.

    Physical Requirements:

    Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.

    This position is a security-sensitive position pursuant to Texas Education Code §51.215 and Texas Government Code §411.094.
