Description:
Position Summary: This Manager, Cast Specialist serves as a clinical and operational leader responsible for overseeing all casting services within the Orthopedic Service. This role is responsible for supervising a team of cast specialists, managing training and certification programs, ensuring adherence to quality standards in casting and durable medical equipment application and inventory, and collaborating with physicians and clinic leadership to optimize workflows and enhance patient care.
Position Key Accountabilities: Essential Functions
- Designs and implements comprehensive training programs for cast technicians, and ensures staff maintain required certifications and demonstrate clinical competencies.
- Ensures all cast specialists maintain clinical competencies in casting techniques, durable medical equipment application, and adherence to safety protocols.
- Serves as the lead educator and quality reviewer for all casting-related skills.
- Manages inventory levels for casting materials and durable medical equipment to ensure readiness and cost-effectiveness.
- Assists with cast and splint application, removal, and adjustment under the supervision of a licensed provider, while ensuring adherence to provider-specific protocols and patient education standards.
- Continuously evaluates and improves workflows for efficiency and safety, and leads the planning and setup of casting rooms for new and existing clinic locations.
- Serves as the primary liaison between casting services and clinical leadership, providers, and supply chain teams.
- Provides clinical coverage as needed to maintain operational continuity.
- Manages Human Resources activities of department in regards to: recruiting and selection, hiring and termination, training, professional development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Certification/Skills: - Strong knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology, along with specialized expertise in the materials, tools, and techniques used in the application of casts, splints, and braces.
- In-depth understanding of orthopedic immobilization methods and durable medical equipment handling.
- Demonstrates the ability to train and mentor cast technicians across all experience levels, clearly conveying proper casting techniques, safety protocols, and best practices to ensure high standards of patient care and clinical efficiency.
- Certified Orthopaedic Technologist (COT) by National Board for Certification for Orthopaedic Technologists (NBOT) required or
- Registered Orthopedic Technologist (R.O.T.) by The American Society of Orthopedic Professionals (ASOP) required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) by American Heart Association (AHA) required
Minimum Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required
Minimum Experience: 5 years of experience in a hospital, clinic, or medical practice setting required
Physical Requirements: Exerts up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds frequently and/or up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
