The School of Dentistry is looking for an experienced, compassionate, upbeat Oral Surgery Assistant or an experienced general dentistry assistant (we are willing to train oral surgery). You need to be confident in assisting in extractions, supply ordering, working at a fast pace, and helping lead the rest of the assistants. The department has 10 oral surgeons to assist and will learn something new everyday in a face paced environment giving the best patient care to every patient that we see. Position Summary:

Perform routine tasks assisting the professional dental staff and students in the examination and prophylactic, therapeutic and surgical treatment of patients. Works more independently under general supervision.

Position Key Accountabilities:
  • Assists in the teaching of dental students, dental assisting students, and dental hygiene students in the principles of four-hand dentistry and dental assistant utilization (DAU).
  • Provides chair side assistance to students and faculty.
  • Maintains and prepares equipment, instruments, and supplies within working area. Sterilizes instruments.
  • Maintains infection control standards.
  • Assists with training of Dental Assistant I.
  • Assists with complex restoration procedures.
  • Maintain records of patients seen, patient recall system, procedures performed, materials used, and appointments.
  • Must be able to respond to emergency situations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Certification/Skills:
  • Basic office and computer skills.
  • Dental Assistant by Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE) required
  • Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) by Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) required or
  • Certified Orthodontic Assistant (COA) by Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) required or
  • Dental Anesthesia Assistant National Certification Examination (DAANCE) by American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) required

Minimum Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent required Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) required
Minimum Experience:
2 years of dental assistant experience or completion of an accredited dental assistant program and no dental assistant experience required Years of experience varies based on education level required
Physical Requirements:
Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
