Description:

The D. Bradley McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics (MSBMI) at UTHealth Houston invites applications for tenured or tenure-track, Associate Professor or Professor positions with a primary focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the following departments:
  • Department of Health Data Science and Artificial Intelligence
  • Department of Clinical and Health Informatics
  • Department of Bioinformatics and Systems Medicine

The McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics is the nation's first school of biomedical informatics and a global leader in AI, data science, and health informatics. Located in the Texas Medical Center -the largest medical complex in the world-the school collaborates closely with:
  • UTHealth Houston schools and clinical enterprises
  • Memorial Hermann Health System
  • Harris Health
  • University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center
  • Other institutions in the Texas Medical Center
  • UT System health institutions

Faculty have access to large-scale clinical, imaging, and molecular datasets, as well as enterprise platforms supporting AI research, digital twins, and learning health systems.

DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH DATA SCIENCE AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Responsibilities:
  • Advanced AI methods, including deep learning and foundation models
  • Large language models and generative AI for health and biomedicine
  • Agentic AI
  • Multimodal AI integrating text, imaging, and structured health data
  • Scalable AI systems for large-scale biomedical data platforms
  • AI methods for causal inference, prediction, and decision-making
  • Teach graduate courses, as determined by the curriculum committees and the Dean
  • Develop and participate in collaborative projects with all UTHealth Houston schools and other institutions across the Texas Medical Center, the state, the country, and the world
  • Participate in committees at the school and university levels and contribute to the broader community
  • Secure external funding for research initiatives


DEPARTMENT OF CLINICAL AND HEALTH INFORMATICS

Responsibilities:
  • Implementation and evaluation of AI in clinical care and health systems
  • AI-enabled clinical decision support and workflow transformation
  • Human-AI collaboration and distributed cognition in healthcare
  • AI for population health and health system redesign
  • Responsible and trustworthy AI deployment in real-world settings
  • Teach graduate courses, as determined by the curriculum committees and the Dean
  • Develop and participate in collaborative projects with all UTHealth Houston schools and other institutions across the Texas Medical Center, the state, the country, and the world
  • Participate in committees at the school and university levels and contribute to the broader community
  • Secure external funding for research initiatives


DEPARTMENT OF BIOINFORMATICS AND SYSTEMS MEDICINE

Responsibilities:
  • AI-driven analysis of genomics, proteomics, and multi-omics
  • Systems biology and computational modeling
  • Imaging AI
  • Foundation models for molecular and cellular biology
  • AI approaches to precision medicine and disease mechanisms
  • Integration of molecular, imaging, and clinical data
  • Teach graduate courses, as determined by the curriculum committees and the Dean
  • Develop and participate in collaborative projects with all UTHealth Houston schools and other institutions across the Texas Medical Center, the state, the country, and the world
  • Participate in committees at the school and university levels and contribute to the broader community
  • Secure external funding for research initiatives


Qualifications:
  • A PhD, MD, or equivalent doctoral degree
  • An exceptional record of external funding and scholarship
  • Demonstrated leadership or high potential in AI, biomedical informatics, or computational health science
  • Commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and graduate education
