Position Summary: The Animal Attendant, under close supervision, provides care for laboratory animals in a humane, safe, and sanitary manner using appropriate equipment and established procedures. Performs custodial maintenance duties, including cage processing and related services, to provide proper care to a section or unit of a building.
Position Key Accountabilities: - Provides daily animal care, including cage changing and delivering food and water. Provides routine cleaning and sanitation of the work area.
- Processes dirty equipment through the automated cage wash facility.
- Cleans large animal caging as directed and sanitizes rooms, equipment, and hallways.
- Learns and assists in the animal census and other required documentation.
- Operates washers and dryers to wash and dry scrubs and other items. Folds and packages laundry for staff members to pick up.
- Observes animals for changes in health status and notifies the supervisor or veterinary group as appropriate.
- Learns proper techniques and skills required to care for laboratory animals through classes and hands-on training.
- Monitors and stocks PPE supplies; assists with facility maintenance, floors, and general support.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Certification/Skills: - Computer literacy required to perform daily duties.
Minimum Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required
Minimum Experience: None
Physical Requirements: Exerts up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds frequently and/or up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
Security Sensitive: This position is a security-sensitive position pursuant to Texas Education Code §51.215 and Texas Government Code §411.094. To the extent that a position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Texas Business and Commerce Code §117.001(2), the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired for and to continue to be employed in that position. Personnel in such positions, and similarly situated state contractors, will be routinely reviewed to determine whether things such as criminal history or continuous connections to the government or political apparatus of a foreign adversary might prevent the applicant, employee, or contractor from being able to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure.
