Job Description:
Make a Difference with Supplemental Health Care (SHC)! We are partnering with a school district in Schertz, Texas, to hire a school nurse to provide 1: 1 support for a medically complex student. We are seeking a compassionate, attentive, and reliable 1: 1 support professional to assist a 4-year-old student with specific medical and safety needs in a preschool classroom. The ideal candidate is patient, observant, and comfortable supporting a young child with both medical and developmental considerations while promoting independence and participation in daily classroom activities.
The student is a bright, engaging 4-year-old who benefits from individualized support to ensure her safety, comfort, and full access to the school environment. Key areas of support include: - G-Tube Care: Monitoring and supporting feeding needs as directed by the school nurse and care plan.
Diabetes Management: -Student uses a Dexcom G7 continuous glucose monitor on her arm.
-Staff will monitor glucose readings and follow established protocols in coordination with the school nurse.
Medication Effects: -The student takes ADHD medication that may cause sleepiness, which can temporarily affect their balance and gait.
-Support includes close supervision during transitions, walking, and active play.
Vision Considerations: -Due to a past brain bleed, the student has a weaker left eye.
-They may need gentle guidance with positioning, navigating the classroom, and visual tasks.
Primary Responsibilities
-Provide continuous supervision to ensure the student's safety throughout the school day.
-Support the student's participation in classroom routines, activities, and play.
-Monitor medical devices (Dexcom G7) and communicate with the school nurse as needed.
-Assist with G-tube-related needs under the direction of trained medical staff.
-Offer gentle physical support during transitions or activities when medication-related fatigue affects balance.
-Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and nursing staff to implement the student's care and educational plans.
-Encourage autonomy, confidence, and positive social interactions.
Qualifications
-Experience working with young children, especially in educational or childcare settings.
-Comfort with or willingness to learn basic medical support tasks (training provided).
-Ability to follow detailed care plans and communicate clearly with the school team.
-Patience, empathy, and a calm, supportive presence.
-Reliability and exceptional attention to safety.
