Description:

The Material Handler-Lead is responsible for overseeing and participating in the efficient flow of materials and products within the distribution center. In addition to performing standard material handling tasks—including receiving, storing, picking, and shipping—the Lead provides daily guidance to team members, monitors workflow, and helps ensure adherence to safety, quality, and productivity standards. This role is also responsible for supporting departmental leadership and may act as the point person in the absence of the Logistics Manager. A strong commitment to leadership, safety, and continuous improvement is essential.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Operate forklifts, reach trucks, order pickers, and other PITs in compliance with OSHA and company safety standards
  • Receive incoming shipments and verify counts against packing slips and/or POs
  • Accurately store materials in designated locations, ensuring proper labeling, FIFO rotation, and segregation of nonconforming stock
  • Pick and stage parts and products for work orders, production lines, and outbound shipments
  • Package, palletize, and prepare outbound shipments, completing bills of lading and shipping documents
  • Perform cycle counts and assist with full physical inventories; investigate and reconcile variances
  • Maintain ASEC/5S housekeeping standards, ensuring aisles are clear and materials are stored safely
  • Report shortages, damages, or safety hazards to the Logistics Manager or another designated leader immediately
  • Monitor daily material handling operations and provide direction to Material Handlers to ensure priorities are met
  • Train new team members and reinforce adherence to SOPs, safety protocols, and quality standards
  • Act as the first point of contact for issue resolution and escalate concerns as appropriate
  • Support departmental scheduling by helping coordinate coverage during vacations, absences, or turnover
  • Lead or actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives and cross-functional projects
  • Serve as acting lead for the department during times when the Logistics Manager is absent or unavailable, including communication, task coordination, and issue escalation

Educational requirements:

Desired Skills:

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED required; post-secondary coursework in supply chain, logistics, or a related field preferred
  • 3+ years of experience in a warehouse, distribution center, or material handling environment
  • Demonstrated proficiency operating powered industrial trucks (PIT), including forklifts, reach trucks, and order pickers
  • Prior experience in a lead or peer mentor role strongly preferred
  • Comfortable using ERP and WMS systems, RF scanners, and basic Microsoft Office applications
  • Proven ability to maintain productivity, accuracy, and safety in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated reliability and ability to serve as backup point of contact in the absence of departmental leadership

Physical Demands:

Must be able to work in a noisy, non-climate controlled warehouse environment. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, as well as frequent bending or stooping.
