Position Summary: The staff nurse for Student Health Services is responsible for providing compassionate care to the undergraduate and graduate students of Rice University. The role is best suited for a person who has exceptional time management skills and can work independently as well as part of a team. Job duties will include triage and scheduling of appointments based on individualized health care needs. The nurse will inform the physician team of any concerning symptoms and will approach and respond to student emergencies calmly and effectively. It is important to have a holistic approach to student care, and the nurse will collaborate with other departments to ensure student well-being. The nurse will also spend time educating students based on their health needs and questions.
Workplace Requirements: This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in person at Rice University. The schedule is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday, from Orientation Week (mid-August) to graduation (mid-May). This position does not work during the summer. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.
This role is classified as an essential position, requiring on-site presence to effectively carry out its vital functions during times of recovery.
Hiring Range: $41.00-$44.00 hourly, contingent upon experience and qualifications.
*Non-Exempt (hourly) positions under FLSA are eligible for overtime.
Minimum Requirements: - Associate's degree
- In lieu of the education requirement, additional related education-above and beyond what is required-on an equivalent year-for-year basis may be substituted
- 3+ years of professional experience in nursing
License/Certification Requirements: - RN with a license valid in Texas
- BLS and ACLS certification (ACLS may be completed prior to employment)
Skills: - Knowledge of relevant medical terminology
- Customer service skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and nursing ethics
- Ability to receive and triage telephone inquiries in a tactful, helpful manner
- Ability to respond to emergency situations and campus crises as needed
- Ability to work independently to perform on-site venipuncture, specimen collections, EKGs, breathing treatments, immunizations, PPD testing, and other nursing skills
- Ability to provide appropriate clinical referrals for outside care
- Ability to establish and maintain professional boundaries
- Ability to expand skill set and learn new interventions
Preferences: - Experience in a university health clinic
- Experience in nursing for young adults through adults
- Software experience with Pointnclick
Essential Functions: - Provides patient care for Rice University's Student Health Services by assessing patients' physical, psychosocial, and/or emotional needs
- Triages patients and informs the physician of patient status
- Responds to phone messages from patients and informs physicians as needed
- Orders supplies, stocks, and maintains patients' rooms; sterilizes instruments
- Administers medications as assigned and documents medications; notifies pharmacies of physician-approved prescriptions
- Obtains required consent forms to administer immunizations
- Educates patients and obtains consent for treatment based on their health needs, which can include acute illness, STI prevention and treatment, and contraceptive discussions
- Performs other duties as assigned
Additional Duties: - Assists Student Health Services physicians with exams
- Interdepartmental collaboration with campus partners
- Coordinates task distribution with medical office coordinators
- Participates in campus wellness fairs and vaccination clinics
