Position Summary: The Student Center is comprised of three functional areas: Student Activities, Facilities and Events, and Student-Run Businesses.
The Director of Student Activities will provide direction and leadership for the Student Activities functional area of the Student Center, while supervising three full-time staff members and student assistants. The Director will serve as the advisor to the Student Association, the undergraduate student government organization at Rice. The position will oversee overarching policies and procedures for student clubs (including financial matters, club registration, risk management, and event-related items), and support club development and leadership initiatives within the department. The position will also manage the Student Activities budget and function as the approver for club expense reports and financial paperwork. The Director will also be the lead for OwlNest, Rice's online student engagement platform, including outreach and ongoing training for campus. The Director will support the mission and goals of the Student Center while maintaining high standards related to student life and community development to support the educational mission of the institution.
Ideal Candidate Statement: An ideal candidate has experience supervising full-time staff and advising a complex organization that works with student policy issues and student governance. Prior experience working with a student engagement platform, club registration, risk management, facilitation of leadership programming, and budgeting will also aid a successful candidate.
Workplace Requirements: Hybrid position: This position is offered as a hybrid role, combining both in-office and remote work to provide flexibility and support collaboration. As a heavily student-focused role, this position would work one day remotely and four days in-office during the academic year, and two days remotely and three days in-office during the summer. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.
Hiring Range: $85, 500 - $88, 500 annually, dependent upon qualifications and experience
*Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime.
Minimum Requirements: - Bachelor's degree
- 4+ years of experience in areas such as student activities, advising high-level student organizations, student engagement platforms, leadership development, or budgeting
Skills: - Proven communication skills, including written, oral, and visual
- Advising experience related to a large, complex student organization
- Experience with budgetary oversight and reconciling expenses
- Proven ability to supervise professional staff
- Ability to manage multiple programmatic areas
- Proven ability to direct student leadership programming and large-scale events
- Proven ability to train students and staff
- Proven ability to interpret and uphold university policy
- Experience advising high-level college student leaders in a one-on-one setting

Essential Functions: - Supports department, division, and university mission, vision, and goals
- Oversees the Student Activities functional area of the Student Center, which includes club registration, club development, club finances, club risk management, student events, and undergraduate events with alcohol registration and review processes
- Develops, updates, and enforces operating policies and procedures for Student Activities
- Supervises three professional staff: Associate Director of Campus Events, Assistant Director of Student Activities, and Accounts Specialist
- Advises the Student Association (SA), undergraduate student government and all of its leaders and components, related to policies, programs, student development, and risk management
- Develops, plans, and implements programming and outreach for club student leaders and the campus community in collaboration with team members
- Serves as lead for OwlNest, Rice's student engagement software (currently Anthology Engage), and manages outreach, resources, and trainings related to the platform
- Oversees budget planning and management for Student Activities and oversight for all accounts and programs within the functional area
- Oversees undergraduate alcohol event risk management for clubs and colleges with the Associate Director of Campus Events
- Directs leadership and student development through functional areas and direct advisement of clubs and programs
- Manages assessment, marketing, and outreach for Student Activities
- Serves as liaison with various campus offices and community constituents
Additional Functions: - Serves as backup for direct reports' duties when necessary
- Supervises the financial management for over 300 organizations in conjunction with the Accounts Specialist
- Supports university initiatives and programming through college senators, Student Association committees, and the New Student Representative program
- Provides consultation and advising to support student organizations
- Attendance at after-hours Student Association and departmental events on or off campus will be required
