Position Summary:
Reporting to the Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine and Performance, this position is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of an NCAA Division I Strength and Conditioning program for the Olympic Sports in the athletics department. All staff members are responsible for the policies, procedures, and guidelines of Rice Athletics and Rice University, as well as the job requirements specific to the assignments inherent to strength and conditioning. This position requires working weekends and holidays and attending athletic events as appropriate.

Workplace Requirements:
On-campus position: This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in person. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 2+ years of related experience
  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification
  • First Aid / CPR / AED certified by an accredited service provider
  • Excellent interpersonal, management, and organizational skills

Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and make distinctions among competitive applicants
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Evidence of program planning and management skills

Preferences:
  • Master's degree in Exercise Science, Biomechanics, Kinesiology, or a related field
  • Three to five years of related experience
  • Current NSCA, CSCS or CSCC, SCCC certification
  • Coaching experience in an NCAA Division I program
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations

Essential Functions:
  • Assumes responsibility for year-round sports performance programs for assigned sports. Each program should be scientifically based using the latest research, with an emphasis on enhancing athletic ability while reducing the risk of injury.
  • Oversees the athletic education/instruction, development/training, and evaluation of student-athletes for assigned sports programs.
  • Maintains current knowledge in all related fields/areas of sports performance. Must also be proficient in teaching free weight techniques, Olympic lifts, jump training, and speed development exercises.
  • Works and communicates with all coaches in the athletic department.
  • Tracks student-athletes' subjective and objective measures daily (GPS, daily wellness, Sports Science readiness data, Force Decks, Elite Form) to make appropriate decisions for future training sessions in conjunction with the sport/position coach.
  • Maintains CPR/AED/First Aid certifications and participates in continuing education programs as required to maintain appropriate sports performance certifications.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of and adheres to all applicable University, conference, and NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Assists with other duties/projects as assigned or directed.
