Job Summary:

The Community Builder is responsible for cultivating relationships that foster collective action, trust, and belonging. Rooted in respect for the wisdom of community members, this role supports efforts that emerge from what the community cares about, working with, not to or for, the community. The Community Builder helps create spaces for resident voice, supports local leadership, and bridges connections across all levels-residents, organizations, and systems-to promote equitable, community-led change

Essential Duties:
  • Develops and maintains deep knowledge of community strengths, priorities, networks, and partners that contribute to well-being.
  • Builds authentic, nonjudgmental relationships with community members, with a focus on those historically excluded or underserved.
  • Bridge and foster partnerships with community leaders, relevant organizations, institutions, and private and public leaders that support and will advocate for community goals.
  • Support the community in building confidence and strength by encouraging connections, growing local leadership, organizing around shared goals, and forming meaningful partnerships.

  • Develop insights into community power dynamics and support resident leaders to understand, manage, and challenge these when necessary.
  • Identifies themes and action items that emerge from community engagement and works collaboratively with others to support responsive strategies.
  • Facilitates and participates in community meetings, events, and conversations that surface community hopes, concerns, and opportunities for collective action.
  • Builds and sustains partnerships with community leaders, organizations, institutions, and public/private stakeholders to align efforts with community priorities.
  • Supports community healing, inclusion, and resilience through relational approaches centered on dignity and trust.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience:

High school diploma or GED required. Minimum of one year experience as a community health worker or in a related community-based role required. 1 year of community organizing experience is preferred. Must live in a specific region within MHM's service area Bandera County. Must also be rooted in that region, having lived in that one region for at least 3 consecutive years.

Preferred:
  • Understanding of community development models, particularly Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD).
  • Experience working with and addressing health and social inequities in marginalized populations.
  • Background in community organizing and partnerships with grassroots organizations.
  • Experience engaging or collaborating with diverse faith-based communities.
  • Strong project management, public speaking, conflict mediation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work across departments to achieve shared goals.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Valid certification as a Community Health Worker by the Texas Department of State Health Services must be obtained within one year of employment.

Language Skills:

Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and procedure manuals. Must be able to write clear reports and correspondence. Must be able to speak and present effectively with diverse groups of people. Bilingual in English and Spanish required.

Reasoning Ability:

Must demonstrate the ability to listen deeply, identify shared values, and co-create solutions. Must be able to define problems, gather insights, and draw inclusive, community-driven conclusions. Must demonstrate flexibility, cultural humility, and common-sense judgment in diverse settings.

Computer Skills

Must be able to demonstrate working knowledge of the Internet, Outlook, Word, and Excel applications

Other:

Must be able to drive and have access to a vehicle; maintain valid driver's license and auto liability insurance

While performing the duties of this job, the team member is exposed to an office environment having direct contact with clients and the public. Position necessitates bending, stooping, twisting, turning, walking, climbing step stools, sitting, and standing for periods of time. Must be able to lift and maneuver at least thirty pounds.
