ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Every effort has been made to identify the essential functions of this position.   • Administers prescribed medications and treatments as defined by state regulations in accordance with company policy and procedure under the direction of a licensed nurse
  • A CMA may not:
  • Administer the first dose of a new medication or a previously prescribed medication if the dosage is changed.
  • Any new medication that arrives from the pharmacy without ensuring that it reflects the original prescriptions.
  • As-needed medications
  • Counting of controlled substances
  • Any medication delivered by needle or by intradermal, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous, intrathecal and intraosseous routes.
  • Administration of medication that must be inserted into a nasogastric tube or gastric tube.
  • Changing oxygen settings or turning oxygen on or off.
  • Administer an inhalant medication.
  • Regulate intravenous fluids or the programming of insulin pumps.
  • Administer topical patches or topical medications that require a sterile dressing or assessment of skin condition.
  • Administer sublingual medications.
  • Administer any medication that requires a mathematical conversion between units of measurement to determine the correct dose.


POSITION SUMMARY: The Certified Medication Aide (CMA) works under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or other medical staff and is responsible for assisting nurses by following written and/or oral instructions to administer medications and document drug dosages and times of administration. Additionally, the CMA takes vital signs, assists in examinations and treatments, and assists patients with activities of daily living. The CMA must monitor patients to report changes in the patients' conditions
