Position Description
Job Responsibilities: The Automation Manager is responsible for effectively managing and providing guidance to a group of multi-disciplined engineers responsible for supporting and coordinating all automation activities for the natural gas pipelines. The Manager will help direct the group workload, assess and balance work/project priorities, and interact with multiple departments to coordinate automation scoping, estimating, design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance for the Natural Gas Business Unit. The position will evaluate and assist in developing standards, processes, and programs that encourage safety, reliability, and improved performance and efficiency.
- Provide leadership and vision to a highly technical group.
- Establish within the group and maintain an elevated level of communication and flow of information early in all projects (and support functions) including all stakeholders.
- Detail and define scopes of work/supply, expectations, timelines, and progress reporting.
- Manage workloads, while constantly monitoring and changing priorities.
- Develop and update Automation and Equipment specifications and standards.
- Explore, evaluate, and introduce innovative technologies to enhance safety, reliability, and performance.
- Interact with industry groups, technical committees, and suppliers.
- Provide individual performance monitoring and development.
- Develop, monitor, and implement O& M and Capital budgets.
- Ensure that the Company budget forecasting and accrual processes are properly implemented and followed.
- Promote open, ethical, and continuous communication between various departments, customers, and personnel.
- Collaborate with Company and non-company personnel, take directions from manager(s), focus attention on details, follow work rules, and adhere to work schedules.
Position Requirements
Education Requirements: - Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering preferred, but a combination of equivalent training, education, and/or professional experience may be considered.
Job Requirements: - At least 7 or more years of related technical experience, with a minimum of five years of experience in pipeline automation engineering.
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage a large group comprised of professionals with varying disciplines, backgrounds, and experience levels.
- Manage and influence employee performance through day-to-day interactions and formally through the Performance Review System.
- Strong customer service focus when dealing with Project Management, Business Development, Operations, Contractors, Suppliers, and other internal and external groups.
- Comprehensive understanding of PLC control and HMI design.
- Ability and willingness to undertake and complete automation engineering design, PLC programming, HMI development and/or other related tasks when required to meet project and support deadlines.
- Ability to develop, read, and interpret Piping and Instrument Drawings (P& ID's), electrical and mechanical blueprints and diagrams, cause/effect diagrams, flow charts, etc.
- In depth understanding of equipment used in the compression of natural gas including reciprocating IC engines and compressors, gas turbines, and centrifugal compressors.
- Thorough understanding of automation equipment, instrumentation, compressor unit level, station level, and safety system automation.
- Experience with natural gas compression, pipeline, and measurement facility application, design, and engineering.
- Knowledge and experience with electrical and instrumentation installations in hazardous rated areas.
- Knowledge and understanding of PHMSA (DOT) regulations, NFPA 70 and 70E, and API standards and recommended practices.
- Understanding of project management and experience performing project management activities.
- Strong presentation and report writing skills.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software applications and Microsoft Outlook
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license, and a driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurers.
- Business travel is required and expected to be up to 25% of time.
- Required to carry a cell phone and respond as needed during working and non-working hours.
Preferred Experience, Skills, and Knowledge: - Operational experience and knowledge of natural gas compression, pipeline, measurement, storage, and processing facilities and equipment.
- Familiarity with medium voltage power, high horsepower motors (3000 hp - 20, 000 hp), and variable speed drives used in the compression of natural gas.
- Experience with Allen Bradley PLC programming.
- Experience with Siemens PLC programming.
- Experience with Wonderware InTouch HMI design.
- Experience with Bristol 3300 series and Control Wave programming.
