Position Description
Kinder Morgan is seeking an
Encroachment Engineer with 2-5 years of experience in the Oil & Gas industry. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and processing a wide range of pipeline encroachment inquiries related to natural gas, CO₂, and liquid products pipelines. This role requires technical expertise, strong communication skills, and the ability to collaborate across diverse teams to ensure the safety and reliability of our pipeline network.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders of varying backgrounds, demonstrating professionalism, tact, and courtesy.
- Develop project alternatives and support the development of cost estimates, budget requests and schedules.
- Coordinate encroachment design and construction activities with Operations, field personnel, Engineering, Right-of-Way, Permitting, EH& S, Control Center, and Integrity teams.
- Review and approve encroachment inquiries, including technical drawings, load stress and vibration calculations, and anomaly assessments. Collaborate with the Damage Prevention team to verify facility locations.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for encroachment parties, providing timely updates on project status.
- Maintain and manage the encroachment database and assigned mailboxes.
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements and industry standards for facilities constructed near company assets.
- Prioritize and manage multiple inquiries simultaneously, adapting to shifting priorities as needed.
- Provide regular updates to management on project status and developments.
- Prepare accurate monthly reports on encroachment project activities.
- Demonstrate flexibility in taking on new projects and adjusting priorities on short notice.
Position Requirements
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited institution required.
- Preferred disciplines include Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, or Chemical Engineering.
- Equivalent industry experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Experience & Knowledge
- Minimum of 2 years of practical engineering experience in pipelines, petroleum terminals, or utility operations.
- Familiarity with regulatory compliance requirements and industry standards, including 49 CFR Part 192/195 and API 1102.
Certifications & Licenses
- Possess and maintain valid driver's license and be insurable by company's insurance carrier.
Competencies & Skills
- Strong application of engineering principles and analytical problem-solving skills.
- Ability to conduct feasibility studies and develop engineering criteria.
- Proven ability to manage and coordinate multiple inquiries simultaneously.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), including advanced Excel spreadsheet management.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, with the ability to interact effectively with colleagues, vendors, customers, contractors, and regulatory officials.
- Collaborative mindset with the ability to accept supervision and direction.
Physical Demands
- Ability to manage the stress of meeting deadlines.
- Capability to climb tank stairs and traverse uneven surfaces along pipeline rights-of-way or at field facilities
Working Conditions
- Based at Houston Headquarters with participation in the Hybrid-Remote Pilot Program.
- Primarily office-based.
