Position Description

The Director position is responsible for effectively managing and providing guidance to multi-disciplined engineers functioning in a technical support role for the company. This position is responsible for Engineering Design and Drafting Services which includes the following engineering disciplines: mechanical, civil, electrical, measurement, compression, drafting as well as other field engineering support services for the company.
The Director will work with internal departments and Business Units (BU's) including Operations, Integrity, Project Management, Regulatory, EHS, Business Development, Legal, Gas Supply, etc. to identify system priorities and appropriate required support.
The Director is responsible for maintaining departmental budgets and must effectively develop, track and forecast departmental budgets for required Responsibility Centers (RC's). Budgets include both labor and non-labor cost types.
This position reports to the Vice President of Project Management & Engineering Design.
Additional specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • The Director will continuously evaluate, update and develop processes and programs that encourage safety, reliability, and improved performance and efficiencies.
  • The Director will focus on strengthening the effectiveness of the team, build knowledge with training and mentoring, and promote high quality professional service.
  • Establishing and maintaining a high level of communication and flow of information early in all projects (and support functions) within the various groups and stakeholders.
  • Leading, directing and improving the Kinder Morgan Engineering, Design and Drafting department.
  • Overseeing all internal and external aspects of engineering design and drafting including value added project management, estimating, operations, and encroachment projects (or other requests as needed).
  • Guiding, directing, and evaluating the work of other employees, including design and drafting Managers.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
  • Lead, direct, supervise, evaluate and develop company employees.

  • Ensure work is completed safely and in compliance with all applicable regulations and corporate policies.
  • Leading, directing and improving all budget, cost control and forecasting responsibilities including OPEX, CAPEX and G& A costs, as applicable.
  • Leading, directing and improving organizational culture in the areas of customer service, integrity, accountability, safety and excellence.
  • Making independent decisions regarding work assignments, personnel, and budget in response to direction received in the form of corporate and team goals, annual objectives, business requirements and company policy.
  • Establish operational best practices and ongoing continuous improvement activities.
  • Ensure proactive, ongoing, high quality customer service is provided to the supported assets on individual and team levels.
  • Action Decision committee (ADC committee) - In charge of various committee requirements for the Action Decision committee (ADC).
  • Developing and building strong customer relationships and providing excellent customer service to both internal and external to the Operations Support Group (OSG).
  • Maximizing the department's performance through tracking/communicating detailed KPI's and improving efficiencies through aligning departmental processes between different business unit (customer) requirements.
  • Demonstrate cohesive teamwork and provide quality staff work through interaction with operational, financial, commercial and other support group peers.
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting of project status, current cost & schedule, forecasted results, risks & opportunities, quality and performance for all required projects.
  • Lead and organize multi-department meetings and decision-making processes.
  • Develop performance milestones for all tasks. Measure progress, evaluate performance and provide clear feedback against those milestones.
  • Ensure company engineering standards are updated timely and followed at all times.


Position Requirements

Education: Engineering Bachelor's degree from an accredited school required.
Experience / specific knowledge:
  • 10 - 15 years applicable Engineering experience
  • 5 or more years' experience in a managerial role.
  • Current working knowledge of the industry and the willingness to maintain that knowledge.
  • Possesses knowledge and experience in design and drafting for large industrial projects.
  • Knowledge of gas transmission and gas gathering (midstream) construction/operations.
  • Expertise/experience in continuous improvement activities.
  • Demonstrated success in leadership and supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated success in financial & budget activities.
  • Demonstrated success in change management.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Innovative problem solving
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
Certifications, licenses, registrations:
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

    • Working knowledge of current API standards and recommended practices as applicable for different business units (Natural Gas, Terminals, CO2, and Products Pipeline)

Working conditions:
  • Primarily office environment, occasional field office or field/plant site.
  • Working after hours, nights, weekends, holidays and on-call as needed
