The Team

A& M's Compensation and Benefits ("CAB") Tax team is comprised of seasoned tax professionals experienced in providing practical tax advice to corporate and private equity buyers throughout the transaction lifecycle. By utilizing an integrated approach with A& M professionals with deep operating and financial-related experience, the team uses a focused and tailored approach to rapidly identify and understand potential deal breakers, value drivers and other areas of specific interest to our clients. We are seeking a payroll and employment tax specialist to join the team.

How you will contribute:

The CAB Tax practice is currently seeking a Director with key expertise in the area of payroll and employment taxes. The ideal candidate will work with our team of professionals to advise companies of all sizes on various compensation, benefits and employment tax matters. As a Director, you will assist clients with the assessment of payroll and employment tax compliance, while designing and implementing practical solutions to mitigate risk. This includes:
  • Serving as a subject-matter expert in: advising clients on employment tax and payroll matters, including compliance, reporting, and strategic planning.
  • Interpreting and applying complex federal, state, and local tax regulations related to employment tax and payroll issues.
  • Assist in leading client engagements on a day-to-day basis and manage staff members on various projects, including:
    • Conducting diagnostic reviews of payroll systems and processes to identify tax risks and recommend improvements.
    • Supporting payroll-focused transaction advisory services, including M& A, restructuring, reorganizations, and HRIS/payroll system transformations.
    • Assisting in identifying and securing employment tax refunds and credits triggered by business transactions.
    • Preparing and reviewing employment tax returns, payroll filings, and related documentation to ensure accuracy and compliance.
    • Providing guidance on fringe benefits, executive compensation, and Form 1099 information reporting.
    • Managing state and local payroll tax account registrations and closures, and analyze state unemployment insurance experience transfers.
    • Supporting clients during federal and state audits, including audit defense and resolution strategies.
    • Prepare tax calculations and various analyses/models to help clients make better informed compensation decisions and comply with the applicable rules and regulations
    • Review/draft technical memoranda and letters related to employment tax issues.
  • Staying current on tax legislation and regulatory changes, and communicate relevant updates to clients and internal teams.
  • Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, including managing staff members, developing and clearly communicating applicable project work plans, objectives, and timelines.
  • Building internal relationships with other members of the Compensation and Benefits Tax team and the greater A& M firm.
  • Valuing diversity of perspectives and creates opportunities for individuals to feel comfortable contributing.
  • Assisting with business development activities, including proposal writing, client presentations, and networking events.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required, Advanced Degree preferred (i.e., JD, LL.M. in Taxation, and/or World at Work Certified)
  • 5+ years of experience in employment tax, payroll, or compensation and benefits
  • Strong understanding of federal, state, and local employment tax regulations and payroll compliance requirements
  • Proven ability to analyze complex tax issues and develop practical solutions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly and concisely
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to work on and manage several projects and effectively manage deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development

The salary range is $130, 000 - $175, 000 annually, dependent on several variables including but not limited to education, experience, skills, and geography.
