Our Coastal/Waterfront Team and Projects
Our Coastal group specializes in providing planning and engineering services to address the challenges of coastal and waterfront storm damage on infrastructure. With climate change having a significant impact on numerous communities, we focus on preventative measures to ensure resilience. Our team of nearly 120 Land Use & Transportation professionals across our 17 regional offices is dedicated to supporting our coastal resiliency projects.
What will you be doing?
In this strategic role as the Waterfront / Coastal Practice Leader, you will oversee staffing, business development, project delivery, and client relationships. Your leadership will ensure that our projects meet the highest standards of design quality, technical excellence, and client satisfaction while contributing to the long-term vision of the practice.
• Staffing and Resource Planning: Coordinate and manage project staffing, ensuring efficient allocation of resources across the waterfront and coastal group. Assist with staff recruitment to support the continued growth and success of the practice.
• Business Development: Build and maintain strong relationships with public and private sector clients, as well as municipal, state, and federal agencies, to identify and develop new business opportunities.
• Proposal Development: Lead the preparation of proposals, facilitate client meetings, and participate in project interviews to secure new projects in the waterfront and coastal sectors.
• Project Oversight: Support the senior-level management of projects, including overseeing scope and fee development, design quality, adherence to budgets and schedules, and client communications.
• Mentorship and Staff Development: Provide technical and professional mentorship to junior staff, fostering their career growth and contributing to a culture of collaboration and excellence.
• Strategic Planning: Contribute to the long-term vision and strategic growth of the waterfront and coastal practice, identifying new service areas and market opportunities.
• Technical Expertise: Provide subject matter expertise in the design and management of coastal infrastructure projects, ensuring projects meet regulatory requirements and client expectations.
• Industry Engagement: Represent the firm in industry associations and at conferences, strengthening our reputation as a leader in the coastal engineering space.
Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Coastal, or Environmental Engineering (Master’s degree preferred).
• Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
• Extensive years of experience (20+) in coastal engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
• Proven track record in designing and managing complex coastal infrastructure projects.
• Strong business development skills with demonstrated success in securing and managing client relationships.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly and effectively.
• Experience managing project scopes, fees, budgets, schedules, and quality control.
• Demonstrated leadership and mentorship skills, with a focus on fostering staff growth and development.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in climate resilience and adaptation projects.
• Familiarity with regulatory frameworks specific to the Northeastern United States.
• Active involvement in professional organizations such as ASCE’s Coasts, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute (COPRI) or PIANC.
• Experience with strategic planning and business line development in coastal engineering.
• Knowledge of sustainable design practices and resilience planning for coastal infrastructure.
