Reporting directly to the Senior Director, Manufacturing Engineering, Vision Care, who leads the global Vision Capital Project Engineering function, the Director, Capital Project Engineering, JJSV Implants, is accountable for delivering major capital projects that enable the production capacity growth and production productivity improvements at our Surgical Vison manufacturing sites, with a focus on Puerto Rico.

Lead teams of engineers and project managers with direct reports and indirect contract reports to execute project management programs. Engage with R& D and equipment development teams to anticipate and plan for future products and projects.

Responsible for developing scope, budget and timeline schedules for project execution to support capacity expansion and cost improvement programs.

Directs project activities in alignment with business objectives in the areas of capacity expansion, cost improvement, quality improvement and new product introductions.

Possesses a high degree of project management competence to drive results and project execution.

Significant people leadership and talent development skills to recruit, develop, manage, motivate and train project managers to establish high functioning project teams for excellence in execution.

Develop strategies and governance methods to establish new projects and track performance of projects to support aligned business goals.

Key Working Relationships:

Coordinate projects with Senior Director, Manufacturing Engineering, Surgical Vision Implants; Senior Director, Process & Product Engineering, Vision; Senior Director, Engineering Technology Development, Vision; Director, Transformation Programs, Surgical Vision Implants; J& J Capital Equipment Procurement, J& J Engineering & Property Services, and Engineering Site Leads to enable JJSV goals.

Work with R& D / Technology Development groups to anticipate projects for new products, new lines, new technologies and fleet retrofits.

Responsibilities:

  • Directly responsible for the overall direction, coordination, implementation, execution, control and completion of JJSV Implants engineering capital projects, ensuring consistency with business strategy, commitments, and goals. This includes defining, identifying and securing appropriate internal and external resources and coordinating the efforts of team members and third-party contractors in order to deliver projects according to plan. (approx. 35% of time)
  • Recruits, develops, manages, trains and motivates a highly proficient group of technical professionals in pursuit of company goals. Leverages talent within and outside of immediate organization to maximize efficiencies, ensure appropriate SME skills are available and capitalize on significant opportunities or address significant issues (approx. 25% of time)
  • Directs / leads technical activities across the areas of quality, delivery / capacity, and cost by proactively identifying opportunities and executing projects and tasks to improve supply reliability and avoid / resolve issues in alignment with business objectives and metrics (approx. 20% of time)
  • Develops engineering and project management systems and strategies, in alignment and support of business objectives through appropriate governance and metrics. Develops and justifies department business plans in alignment and support of company objectives and manages the related department capital and expense budgets and assets. Responsible for tracking project progress, attaining CAPEX spending targets, and developing metrics to ensure continuous improvement within the engineering project office (approx. 10% of time)
  • Engages with new product development teams to ensure a robust, capable, and sustainable supply chain. Partners cross-functionally to lead / influence the development and execution of project CTQs and timing, SC strategy and technical milestones in pursuit of the NPD business objectives (approx. 10% of time)

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related technical degree is required (Preferred MS / MBS level in engineering or technical field)
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant business experience required preferably in the Life Sciences industries (Medical Device, Biotechnology or Pharmaceutical).
  • Experience in or significant support of a manufacturing environment
  • Minimum 10 years of demonstrated people and team management skills
  • Demonstrated ability creating business plans / cases and manage related departmental budgets
  • Demonstrated program / project management skills
  • Demonstrated capital management skills / experience
  • Experience owning the installation, commissioning, and validation activities for automated process equipment in a regulated medical device industry. This includes familiarity with FDA regulatory standards and Good Manufacturing Practices.
  • Experience developing budgets and business case proposals that lead to the acquiring of capital appropriations in excess of $1M USD.
  • Proven track record to effectively estimate cash flows and actively manage project spend to achieve accurate results to forecast.
  • Computer skills and ability to quickly learn new programs
