Johnson & Johnson is recruiting for a Sr. Director, National Medical Science Liaison (MSL) Director, Immunology (Gastroenterology). This position can be located in Horsham, PA OR Remote in the United States.

*This is a field-based role available in multiple cities within the United States. #LI-Remote

The National Medical Science Liaison (MSL) Director, Immunology (Gastroenterology [GI]), is a Senior Director role responsible for establishing the vision and strategy for the MSL team, including accountability for execution and attainment of medical objectives in compliant alignment with the business strategy. They will be responsible for ensuring that the MSL team receives a high-level of direction, training, coaching, and development via oversight of the regional Field Directors and in collaboration with the HQ TA team and MSL training and analytics teams.

Reporting to the VP of US Medical Affairs, GI and Autoantibody, this individual will be accountable for team delivery of high-quality communications regarding the science and clinical applications of our products and/or the disease state to external stakeholders on a regional and national level, as well as obtaining and synthesizing important insights about current practice, treatment landscape, and emerging scientific and clinical data following compliance policies. The ideal candidate will have a record of strong leadership combined with exceptional business acumen and clinical expertise as this individual is expected to build strong cross-functional relationships with internal colleagues as well as external relationships with HCPs and KOLs. This role currently is responsible for leading a team of 30 MSLs through 4 Region-based Field-Director direct reports.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Develops, and/or maintains, a high level of therapeutic area medical and scientific expertise in Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease, and other disease states that may evolve in the GI franchise, and demonstrate business acumen to support brand strategy and to coach/develop team
  • Translates medical strategic priorities into clear field medical goals, objectives, and initiatives with performance metrics to demonstrate the value proposition of the Field Medical team
  • Works with Field Directors to develop the external KOL and HCP engagement strategy to maximize field territory plans. Contribute strategically and tactically to National KOL and HCP engagement efforts, scientific meeting planning and execution, and professional society engagement
  • Lead team interacting with key accounts and institutions, including IDNs, to collaborate on research areas of mutual interest, including population health and real-world evidence initiatives of mutual interest, liaising and connecting with internal SMEs in RWVE, Population Health, Key Account Management, and HQ Medical Directors, etc. as appropriate
  • Cross-functional leadership and collaboration within US and Global Medical Affairs, US Commercial, Clinical Development, Business Development, and other functions for synergistic opportunities, and represent Immunology on cross-TA initiatives and teams, such as the US Field Medical Leadership Board (FMLB)
  • Management and development of all team members including hiring, training, mentoring, coaching, performance management, and career development
  • Represent GI MSL team and provide key strategic and leadership contributions as a member of the Medical Affairs Leadership Team (MALT), Integrated Evidence Team (IET), Launch team meetings (pre- and post-), and annual Business Planning, among others, providing key insights and actionable plans to address needs and opportunities
  • Routine oversight of individual and team metrics/requirements to ensure appropriate motivation, recognition, and coaching/intervention for Field Directors and MSLs, as needed, and help shape appropriate metrics and areas of focus, consistent with strategic and scientific needs
  • Participates in ride-alongs with MSLs and Field Directors within territories as well as observation at Advisory Boards, congresses, etc. ensuring high quality engagements an for coaching and development purposes
  • Leverage data analytics and new technology to increase the ability to identify and segment thought leaders and clinical experts, and improve operational effectiveness with metrics and dashboards in the field
  • Continues to refine process for collection, interpretation, and timely communication of meaningful field-gathered insights to internal partners
  • Determine headcount capacity and directly accountable for an operating budget and alignment with US medical affairs resource needs
  • Supports ongoing and proposed clinical trials, including prospective Phase 3b/4 and Post Marketing Commitment (PMC) studies through the MSL team and representing the team as national leader.

Qualifications

  • An advanced degree (such as a PharmD, PhD, MD, or an APP degree, E.g. DNP) is required
  • Minimum of 3 years previous Medical Affairs Leadership experience, ideally including MSL management responsibility with demonstrated success is required
  • A minimum of 8 years of Medical Affairs and/or Clinical Research & Development experience in the pharmaceutical industry is required
  • Gastroenterology (ideally in IBD), Hepatology, or Immunology experience is required.
  • Travel: Approximately 35% annual domestic travel. Must live sufficiently near an airport to enable attendance at key scientific congresses and internal meetings (for which some proximity to Horsham, PA and Titusville, NJ may be mutually desirable).

The expected base salary for this role: $173, 000-$299, 000
