Job Description
County of Berks is hiring a Human Resources Assistant in Reading, PA. This is a full-time position.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Human Resources Assistant is responsible for the daily administrative duties of the County of Berks’ human resources department. The Human Resources Assistant assists with record maintenance, recruiting, and other administrative tasks. This individual must have basic knowledge of employment laws and regulations pertaining to human resources, as well as a thorough understanding of County policies and practices. The Human Resource Assistant provides clerical assistance to County employees.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential Functions
The duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not necessarily limited to:
- Provide assistance to internal and external customers by answering questions via telephone, email, or through in-person interaction
- Daily oversight of the Human Resources email inbox; provide correspondence when appropriate, process requests, and direct inquiries to appropriate team members
- Ensure that common areas of the Department are maintained and organized
- Process Request to Fill forms by collecting information and verifying information is accurate; compile RTFs for approval
- Complete employee separation checklists, create separation reports, and mail separation letters to employees
- Compile medical screening forms and coordinate the medical screening process
- Obtain information for new employees’ Form I-9; file and maintain forms according to best practices and standards
- Process requests for employment verifications by reviewing requests and ensuring releases are completed by employees
- Responsible for filing documents in personnel files; create new files according to Department standards
- Administer the employee badge system
- Participate in the County Safety Committee and accomplish assigned duties and tasks
- Facilitate new hire orientation
- Provide assistance to other human resources team members on various matters
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or G.E.D. certification from a recognized issuing agency
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Psychology, or other related field preferred
- Minimum of one year experience as a human resources assistant, administrative assistant, or other office support assistant
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of HRMS or payroll systems helpful, preferably Oracle systems.
- Ability to think through processes and understand how HR roles impact other County departments
- Excellent attention to detail and listening skills
- Ability to interact professionally and cordially with employees from across the County
- Knowledge of employment laws, HIPPA, EEO, etc.
- Ability to handle stress
- Physical presence in the office is required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work involves standing, walking, sitting, lifting, carrying, talking, hearing, using hands to handle, feel objects, tools, or controls, and reaching with hands and arms. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds a distance of 15 feet or less.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Normal cubicles and individual office environment. Work is primarily performed during regular business hours. The position may require working in moderately noisy to loud environments, including cubicles and communal workspaces, and participating in frequent collaborative team meetings. The work environment may include a fast-paced setting with frequent interruptions, changing priorities, and interactions with employees, the public, and other stakeholders
