Description:
Position Summary
The Ventilation Engineer is responsible for supporting the underground mine operations ventilation requirements. This role conducts ventilation surveys, develops and maintains ventilation simulations and models, and works closely with mine management to support ventilation needs and optimize mine ventilation. The ideal candidate has 3+ years of underground coal ventilation experience and holds valid Pennsylvania mining certification.
Core Responsibilities

- Conduct regular ventilation surveys including airflow quantity, pressure, gas measurements, and fan performance measurements
- Develop, update, and maintain ventilation models and simulations to support mine planning and ventilation changes
- Collaborate with mine management and engineering staff to address ventilation needs and ensure safe operating conditions
- Recommend and help implement ventilation adjustments (regulators, stoppings, curtains, fan changes) to maintain compliance and improve airflow efficiency
- Support air changes by modeling ventilation impacts and providing engineering guidance
- Participate in inspections, audits, and reviews conducted by MSHA and state regulatory agencies as needed
- Communicate ventilation conditions, risks, and recommendations clearly to operations and leadership teams
Required Skills and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or related engineering discipline preferred
- Minimum 3+ years of underground coal mine experience
- Valid Pennsylvania Mine Certification (Mine Foreman, Assistant Mine Foreman, or Examiner) or ability to obtain certification
- Strong knowledge of MSHA ventilation regulations
- Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience with CAD modeling preferred
- Proficiency with ventilation modeling software preferred
- Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills for interacting with mine operations and regulatory personnel
Work Environment
- Office-based with field visits to mine operations as needed to conduct ventilation surveys
- Occasional travel as needed to support all mine operations
- Occasional irregular hours to support operational changes or ventilation needs
