Position Details:

Hours: Monday–Friday, 8: 00 AM – 4: 30 PM, 40 hours/week
Start Date: As soon as possible
Location: Erie, PA – 100% in-office

Overview:

As a Maintenance Repairman at the Barber National Institute, you will play a key role in keeping our facilities safe, functional, and efficient for the children, adults, families, and staff we serve. This hands-on role involves performing a wide range of repairs and upkeep across machinery, buildings, grounds, and equipment.

You’ll work both independently and as part of a team, troubleshooting issues, responding to emergencies, and ensuring that our facilities operate smoothly. This is a great opportunity for someone skilled across multiple trades who takes pride in problem-solving and creating a safe, welcoming environment.

What You’ll Bring:

  • Strong skills in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and lighting systems.
  • Knowledge of building systems, fire alarms, and safety protocols.
  • Basic carpentry skills for building repairs.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
  • Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to respond promptly to urgent maintenance issues.
  • Organizational skills to maintain records, inventory, and preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Comfort using computers or smart devices for scheduling, reporting, and CMMS systems.

What You’ll Have:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High School Diploma required.
  • Minimum of one year of hands-on maintenance experience.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Preferred experience across multiple trades (HVAC, welding, carpentry, electrical, plumbing).

A Typical Day May Include:

  • Conducting regular inspections of buildings, grounds, and equipment.
  • Performing preventative maintenance tasks to extend the life of systems and machinery.
  • Diagnosing and repairing issues across HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • Responding to emergency maintenance requests and participating in an on-call rotation.
  • Supporting snow removal, seasonal groundskeeping, and event setup.
  • Maintaining inventory of tools, parts, and supplies.
  • Keeping accurate records of inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities.
  • Collaborating with the Maintenance Supervisor, contractors, and staff to complete tasks efficiently.
  • Managing fire safety responsibilities for the Erie area, including:
    • Scheduling and coordinating bi-annual fire alarm inspections across 80+ locations.
    • Acting as first contact with Doyle Security and Wilkins Central Station regarding fire alarms and maintenance.
    • Following up immediately on after-hours fire alarm calls.
    • Conducting and documenting monthly school fire drills.
    • Completing monthly fire extinguisher, exit sign, and emergency lighting inspections at BNI Campus and day program sites.
    • Coordinating annual fire extinguisher inspections at 80+ locations.
    • Scheduling and overseeing bi-annual sprinkler inspections and annual Fire Department inspections.
