Overview:

As the Assistant Controller at the Barber National Institute, you will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of all financial reporting for assigned companies. This mid-level management role supports the Controller in overseeing financial activities, internal controls, and reporting while leading a small team of accounting associates (2-5 direct reports).

You will play a vital part in producing timely financial statements, managing the close process, and supporting audits and compliance efforts. This position requires a detail-oriented and analytical leader who can balance financial accuracy with mentorship, coaching, and professional development of staff, while ensuring the organization maintains compliance with GAAP, IFRS, and nonprofit reporting standards.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor accounting staff, building a high-performing team
  • In-depth accounting knowledge, including nonprofit financial reporting (Functional Expenses, Net Assets classifications, Federal Awards schedules)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to interpret complex financial data and provide meaningful insights
  • Excellent communication skills to partner effectively with financial and non-financial stakeholders
  • High level of accuracy, organization, and attention to detail under deadlines
  • Adaptability and flexibility to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment

What You’ll Have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (required)
  • At least 8 years of progressive experience in accounting or auditing
  • A minimum of 4 years of supervisory experience in accounting or finance
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite (with advanced Excel skills required)
  • CPA or CMA certification preferred

A Typical Day May Include:

  • Leading, mentoring, and developing Accounts Payable and Accounting Associate staff
  • Reviewing balance sheets, income statements, and preparing cash flow statements for leadership review
  • Managing all general ledger transactions, reconciliations, and inter-company accounting
  • Preparing monthly KMIs and quarterly debt covenants for organizational oversight
  • Supporting retirement plan operations, including coordination with auditors
  • Ensuring compliance with financial policies, GAAP, IFRS, and nonprofit reporting standards
  • Documenting close processes, allocation methodologies, and guiding staff through complex transactions
  • Assisting with external audits and IRS 990 preparation for Barber National Institute companies
  • Partnering with the Controller to analyze data, provide recommendations, and drive continuous improvement in financial practices
