JOB DESCRIPTION

Roseburg Studmill

Position Title: Sawfiler

Reports to: Lead Saw Filer

Department: Maintenance


Hours per shift: Works up to 12 hour shifts


Wage: To be determined based on skill, abilities, knowledge, and experience.


Position Purpose: Saw filer will be responsible for supporting and promoting company policies and procedures while encouraging the same positive behavior in each member of the saw filing team. Safety is a priority. Following lockout procedures is mandatory at all times. Use of personal protective equipment should include eye protection, gloves, hearing protection, and sturdy boots. Practice safe lifting at all times. Keep all guards, shields, and covers in place to protect yourself.

Position Functions:

Essential Functions*

These duties are designated as ADA Essential Functions and must be performed in this job.

  1. Maintain a high level of communication with supervisors, machine operators, and
  1. Troubleshoots saw damage, monitors saw changes.
  1. Inspect, level, tension, and sharpen bandsaws and circle saws.
  1. Side grinds bandsaws and circle saws.
  1. Lift saws in and out of tippers and grinders.
  1. Help with repair of damaged saw teeth by welding or replacing the teeth (oxy/acetylene
  1. Assist in the process of knife grinding.
  1. Assist with saw changes at edgers and bandmills. Report incorrect saw change procedures
  1. Help with cleaning, pouring, and shaving of saw guides.
  1. Understand filing room machine operation, calibration, troubleshooting, maintenance,
  1. Have a good working knowledge of how to line up, operate, and repair all edgers and
  1. Have a strong working relationship with the maintenance department, including completion of PM’s and any additional maintenance as needed.

Non-Essential Functions

These duties are secondary in nature and are not classified as ADA essential.

  1. Assist with cleaning of filing room machinery

Working Environment: (1) Inside 90%, average temperature 70 degrees F (2) Outside 10%; extreme low temperature 10 degrees F, extreme high temperature 105 degrees F. Noise or vibration: Machine noise to include machine being operated as well as other machines close by including Forklifts. Hazards: See Job Hazard Analysis. (3) Atmospheric conditions: Fumes: Wood, Dust: Limited, Mist: Water, Odors: Wood particle, Gasses: None, Poor Ventilation: None


Personal Protective Equipment Required: (1) Eye Protection. (2) Hearing Protection. (3) Rubber or Leather based gloves when handling dry veneer. (4) Approved Footwear.


Physical Demands: See the Physical Capabilities as listed below; this position requires constant use of hearing and vision, bilateral use of arms and hands, frequent bending, twisting, pushing/pulling and reaching, and occasional lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling more than 30 lbs.


Skills: Must have excellent hand eye coordination. Use vision/hearing continuously. Reading and speech required to communicate comprehension of Job Hazard Analysis, machine specific lockout procedures, monthly safety training, etc. Worker generally works alone with little supervision. Operators must be self-directed in identifying and efficiently completing each task. Ability to prioritize, organize and make necessary decisions.


Safety: (1) Do only maintenance you are trained to do and keep all body parts out of machinery. (2) Always use our 14 step lockout/tagout procedure before doing any maintenance, clearing jams, or getting into machinery for any reason; be aware of stored energy. (3) Always use proper body mechanics (ex: don’t over reach, get help as needed to push loads out). (4) Use proper PPE (gloves, eye protection, hearing protection). (5) Be aware of and communicate with your co-worker at all times (ex: forklift driver). (6) Will be required to read and write during safety training.
