Position Title: Lead Saw Filer

Reports To: Maintenance Supervisor

Department: Maintenance

Hours per shift: Employee works 12-hour shifts (Schedule may fluctuate depending on mill needs and machine center down time)

Wage: $39.66

Position Purpose: Responsible for supporting Plant Manager in providing leadership and direction of the saw filers in their daily job routines by issuing work orders and through direct communications. Lead Saw filer communicates with and keeps Plant Manager informed of all problems and progress. Lead Saw filer will be responsible for supporting and promoting company policies and procedures while encouraging the same positive behavior in each member of the saw filing team. Safety is a priority. Following lockout procedures is always mandatory. Use of personal protective equipment should include eye protection, gloves, hearing protection, and sturdy boots. Always practice safe lifting. Keep all guards, shields, and covers in place to protect yourself. Safety is a habit you should practice and encourage your co-workers to do the same.

Position Functions:

Working Environment: (1) Inside 90%, average temperature 80 degrees, extreme low temperature 10 degrees F, extreme high temperature 120 degrees F. (2) Outside 10%. Noise or vibration: Machine noise to include machine being operated as well as other machines close by including Forklifts. Hazards: See Job Hazard Analysis. (3) Atmospheric conditions: Dust: Limited, Mist: Water, Odors: Dry wood, Gasses: None, Poor Ventilation: None. The worker in this position will be standing on a slightly elevated wooden platform with rubber mats. The worker will move back and forth on this platform in front of an elevated dry conveyor measuring 3 ½ to 4’ above the ground. Physical Demands: See the attached Job/Task Evaluation and Physical Capabilities portion; this position requires constant use of hearing and vision, frequent bending, twisting, pushing/pulling and reaching, and occasional lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling more than 50 lbs.

Skills: Must be a high school graduate and have a minimum of 2 years’ experience. Organizing and coordinating schedules; analyzing and interpreting data; problem solving, completing written work orders. Must be able to concentrate in a noisy environment, deal with frequent interruptions, juggle multiple projects, meet deadlines, exercise independent judgment or perform other mental tasks. Interacts effectively with others to convey thoughts, ideas, and information; utilizes the power of positive persuasion to gain the support of others. Use vision/hearing continuously, reading and speech required to communicate comprehension of Job Hazard Analysis, Machine Specific Lockout Procedures, monthly safety training topics, and Job Certification if applicable. Worker generally works alone, with little supervision. Must be self-directed in identifying and efficiently completing each next task. Additionally:

* Proficient in Round saw (fitting/benching)

* Proficient in Band saw (fitting/benching)

* Guides – proficient in milling and setting up saw guides.

* Assist with saw changes, both band and circular.

* Maintain and complete routine repairs to the filing room grinding equipment.

* Assist with machine center alignment and maintenance.

* Quality Control – measuring lumber and making machine adjustments.

* Basic Computer Skills

* Demonstrated thoroughness and attention to detail with a strong sense of urgency.

* Must possess good communication skills and work well in a team setting.

* Assist production personnel with any material flow related to production equipment.

* Be able to learn and operate equipment within Sawmill

* Keep up with production flow when on general labor.

* Identify wood species.

Safety: (1) Do only maintenance you are trained to do and keep all body parts out of machinery. (2) Always use our 14-step lockout/tagout procedure before doing any maintenance, clearing jams, or getting into machinery for any reason; be aware of stored energy. (3) Always use proper body mechanics (ex: don’t overreach, get help as needed to push loads out). (4) Use proper PPE (gloves, eye protection, hearing protection). (5) Be aware of and always communicate with your co-worker (ex: forklift driver). (6) Will be required to read and write during safety training.
