Description:

Position Title: Boiler Operator

Reports to: Boiler Supervisor

Department: Boiler

Hours per shift: Employee works 8 hours per day with some overtime. Two 10-minute breaks and one 20-minute lunch. Day shift: 7: 00 A.M. to 3: 00 P.M. - Swing shift: 3: 00 P.M. to 11: 00 P.M. - Graveyard: 11: 00 P.M. to 7: 00 A.M. Some off shift or weekend work may be required for relief purposes. Different shifts will have different days off, and some may have rotating hours.

Wage: Level 4


Position Purpose: Boiler operator will be responsible for safe operation of Boiler and related equipment. Also responsible to oversee Boiler Utility position, and perform repair, fire watch, and clean up duties as assigned. Maintain safety and quality standards as outlined in the Job hazard Analysis, Standard Operating Procedures, and other requirements as directed by the Supervisor for safe and efficient operation of the boiler. Must be willing to be evolved in continuous education as directed by Boiler Supervisor

Position Functions:

Essential Functions*

These duties are designated as ADA Essential Functions and must be performed in this job.

Maintain water level in Boiler

Maintain steam pressure by monitoring fuel cells, steam load, and dryer gasses.

Continuous monitor of Boiler gauges and readouts.

Continuous communication with Plywood and veneer, if away from radio on Boiler platform wear a radio.

Communicate when necessary by telephone. (6) Enter hourly Boiler log readings and necessary reports.

When operating at low fire load (when Plywood is off line) Boiler Operator will most times be working alone. At these times Operator will handle fuel and clean fuel cells. Operator must check Boiler readouts at close intervals, (not more than every 15 minutes), and be alert for any alarms. Alarms are both audible and visual (flashing red light at Boiler front. Any alarm requires an instant response check of Boiler controls and readouts.

Continuous watch for spot fires especially in rafters, call for help to watch for fires after a flare up.

Make sure you understand company policy for fire watch

Become familiar with facility layout.

Always comply with Federal, State, and Company rules, policies, regulations and procedures.

Non-Essential Functions

These duties are secondary in nature and are not classified as ADA essential.

Other duties as assigned for facilitation and cross-training purposes

Working Environment: (1) Inside 90%, average temperature 70 degrees F (2) Outside 10%; extreme low temperature 10 degrees F, extreme high temperature 105 degrees F. Noise or vibration: Machine noise to include machine being operated as well as other machines close by including Forklifts. Hazards: See Job Hazard Analysis. (3) Atmospheric conditions: Fumes: Wood, Dust: Limited, Mist: Water, Odors: Wood particle, Gasses: None, Poor Ventilation: None.

  • The worker may be responsible for repair, clean up or fire watch during down times or between shifts.
  • The worker may be required to rotate to different positions or shifts for cross training purposes or to facilitate production. Job duties for other positions are outlined in their individual Job Descriptions.
  • Assist co-workers or Maintenance personnel in repair or maintenance.


Personal Protective Equipment Required: (1) Eye Protection. (2) Hearing Protection. (3) Gloves when cleaning fuel cells, cleanup, working with wood or cutting and welding. (4) Approved Footwear. (5) Safety vest or high visibility coveralls.


Physical Demands: See the Physical Capabilities as listed below; this position requires constant use of hearing and vision, bilateral use of arms and hands, frequent bending, twisting, pushing/pulling and reaching, and occasional lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling more than 30 lbs.


Skills: Must have excellent hand eye coordination. Use vision/hearing continuously. Reading and speech required to communicate comprehension of Job Hazard Analysis, machine specific lockout procedures, monthly safety training, etc. Worker generally works alone with little supervision. Operators must be self-directed in identifying and efficiently completing each task. Ability to prioritize, organize and make necessary decisions.


Safety: (1) Do only maintenance you are trained to do and keep all body parts out of machinery. (2) Always use our 14 step lockout/tagout procedure before doing any maintenance, clearing jams, or getting into machinery for any reason; be aware of stored energy. (3) Always use proper body mechanics (ex: don’t over reach, get help as needed). (4) Use proper PPE (gloves, eye protection, hearing protection). (5) Be aware of and communicate with your co-worker at all times (ex: Utility, Millwrights, contractors). (6) Will be required to read and write during, normal operation and safety training. (7) If a problem arises that makes you concerned that the Boiler is in an unsafe condition, shut down Boiler, notify Plywood and Veneer, and call Boiler Supervisor. Read SOP for boiler operation located on Boiler control panel until you know them, then reread them every 30 days.
