Description:

Position Title: Fuel Handler

Reports To: Boiler Supervisor

Department: Boiler

Hours per shift: Employee works 12-hour shifts, with two 10-minute breaks, and 30-minute unpaid lunch.

Day: 6: 00 A.M. to 6: 00 P.M. Swing: 6: 00 P.M. to 6: 00 A.M.

Wage: Level 2/3

Position Purpose: Responsible for continuous monitoring and operation of boiler fuel system. Perform Firewatch and Maintenance Helper duties when required. Maintain safety and quality standards as outlines in the Job Hazard Analysis, Standard Operating Procedures and other requirements as directed by the Supervisor for the safe and efficient operation of the Boiler.

Fuel Handler: Essential Functions*

These duties are designated as ADA Essential Functions and must be performed in this job.

Maintain boiler fuel pile

Feed fuel into the system

Clean boiler cells by using proper cell procedures and combustion chamber. Sometimes confined space entry may be needed. This job requires working at heights frequently.

Operate front-end loader/bobcat

Monitor boiler equipment/gauges/valves

Monitor boiler computer readout

Comply with Federal, State, and Company rules, policies and procedures

Fire Watch

The worker may be required to rotate to different positions for cross training purposes or to facilitate production. Job duties for other positions are outlined in their individual job descriptions.

You are responsible for radio communication when the Boiler is down.

Non-Essential Functions

These duties are secondary in nature and are not classified as ADA essential.

Perform other duties and functions as assigned by supervisor for production and cleaning purposes.

Working Environment: (1) Environmental exposure - Inside 20% of the time: Average temperature 65 degrees, high 110 degrees, and low 50 degrees. Outside 80% of the time: Average temperature 65 degrees, high 110 degrees, and low 30 degrees. (2) Noise or Vibration - Boiler, Loader, Bobcat and other machine noises, forklift noise and similar heavy equipment found in the area. (3) Atmospheric conditions - Potential for: Dust, Fumes, Extreme Heat, Steam.


Personal Protective Equipment Required: (1) Eye Protection. (2) Hearing Protection. (3) Blue Atlas gloves when feeding re-dry veneer. (4) Approved Footwear.


Physical Demands: See the Physical Capabilities as listed below. Worker will bend, twist, squat, push/pull (back legs) using waist, shoulders, arms, hands, and wrists to manipulate a variety of hand tools. Occasionally lift up to 50 lbs. Climb ladders and stand for long periods of time. Must be able to concentrate in a noisy environment, deal with frequent interruptions, juggle multiple projects, meet deadlines, exercise independent judgment or perform other mental tasks.


Skills: Must successfully complete required training for rolling stock and equipment used. Successful completion of firewatch/fire suppression training. Firewatch will (1) become familiar with facility layout. (2) Communicate with maintenance and prior firewatch. (3) Inspect work site for hot spots or possible sources of combustion. (4) Extinguish any fires that may occur. (5) Continue area inspection for at least 2 hours after completion of hot work. (6) Periodically inspect areas outside of hot work area for possible combustion sources or fires.

Safety: (1) Do only maintenance you are trained to do and keep all body parts out of machinery. (2) Always use our 14 step lockout/tagout procedure before doing any maintenance, clearing jams, or getting into machinery for any reason; be aware of stored energy. (3) Always use proper body mechanics (ex: don’t over reach, get help as needed to push loads out). (4) Use proper PPE (gloves, eye protection, hearing protection). (5) Be aware of and communicate with your co-worker at all times (ex: forklift driver). (6) Will be required to read and write during safety training.
