POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Globe and Mail is seeking a senior visuals editor, international, to join our visuals team.


This AA role is an opportunity to work with award-winning photojournalists based around the world on The Globe’s high-impact visual storytelling. The ideal candidate will have strong editorial judgment with a track record of creating compelling visual-first narratives.


Reporting to the head of photo and video, the senior visuals editor, international will help craft and hone visual storytelling, curate and edit visual content for multiple platforms, write and edit captions and other copy, and help manage logistics for complex international assignments.


Collaboration is essential for success in this role. You will work closely with the visual team, the foreign desk, and senior editors across the newsroom to see projects through ideation to production and publication.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Evaluate and help shape pitches from photographers, ensuring alignment with newsroom priorities and clarity on scope, deliverables, timing, and resources
  • Closely follow the news and pitch relevant story ideas
  • Coordinate risk assessment and safety planning for hostile-environment assignments
  • Maintain close contact with photographers in the field, providing editorial guidance and support throughout assignments
  • Oversee photo ingest, curation, transcription, and caption editing/writing as needed
  • Write supporting text for photo essays and other visual packages where appropriate
  • Act as a project manager on visual-led assignments, coordinating across editing, digital design, podcast, video, and graphics, to ensure the work is presented strongly across platforms
  • Build and maintain relationships with high-profile freelance photographers, helping ensure The Globe remains a preferred partner for ambitious international work

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least five years of previous photo editor experience in a newsroom
  • Previous experience working with photographers in conflict zones and other complex environments
  • Strong news judgment and deep understanding of current world events
  • Demonstrated experience of successfully managing multiple projects on deadline
  • Detail-oriented with clear communication skills
  • Strong familiarity with Photo Mechanic and full Adobe Suite of programs
