POSITION OVERVIEW:


The Globe and Mail is seeking an assistant sports editor to help drive our sports coverage.


Reporting to the sports editor, the ideal candidate will have deep knowledge and enthusiasm for a variety of sports, with a talent for identifying the people and storylines that appeal beyond sports fans and tap into the zeitgeist.


The sports team is highly collaborative and the assistant editor will have the opportunity to brainstorm ideas, as well as assign, edit and promote stories in a variety of formats and on multiple platforms.


This role requires versatility and excellent communication with departments across the newsroom, from other assigning editors to visuals to audience.


This role is required to work evening hours and some weekends.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assign and edit sports coverage
  • Write headlines and promote stories on website, alerts and/or newsletters
  • Handle print programming in evenings
  • Work with reporters and editors across the newsroom to brainstorm and execute ideas
  • Help lead coverage for big events like the Stanley Cup playoffs, Olympics or World Cup

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least five years of experience working in daily news
  • Strong sense of sports and solid news judgement
  • Strong editing skills
  • Previous experience assigning coverage is an asset
  • Ability to work evenings and some weekends
