Description:

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Can execute various metallurgical lab functions with minimal or no supervision.
  • Perform tensile and hardness testing on tubular samples to support QC and production.
  • Prepare and review Material Test Reports against customer requirements for product shipments.
  • Prepare samples and conduct metallographic analysis.
  • Setup, perform, and report results from corrosion tests.
  • Validate and review calibration status of testing machines.
  • Maintain and support Lab 5S initiative.
  • Conduct metallurgical studies on stainless steel tube and write technical reports.
  • Perform failure analysis and recommend further action to correct the problem.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to follow procedures and guidelines outlined in the Laboratory Work Instructions and ASTM manuals, produce accurate and reliable tensile and hardness test results with a fast turnaround to satisfy regular production and requests from internal customers.
  • Will ensure testing equipment is in good physical condition, yearly calibrations are kept up, and when required, perform indirect verifications on the Lab’s hardness machine against calibration standards.
  • Work with AS400 program to enter mechanical test results, review the manufacturing process, and/or help to complete Material Test Reports in a timely manner to support on time deliveries.
  • Communicate findings of non-conforming or suspect material with Quality Inspectors and all stakeholders.
  • Set-up and execute corrosion tests, interpret results and present results to stakeholders.
  • Must have strong report writing and communication skills to summarize results into formal reports.
  • Coordinate work with external Laboratories as required.
  • Periodically perform pickle bath analysis for production to determine concentrations of the nitric and hydrofluoric acid as well as metals content and communicate findings to production.
  • Works in a safe manner and observes all practices and PPE requirements.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrates responsibility, reliability and self-motivation.
  • Follows instructions given by the Supervisor and/or Manager, Welding & Metallurgy to accomplish job assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Minimum college diploma in a 3-year Mechanical/Metallurgical/Welding Technology program.
  • Previous experience working in a welding manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Working knowledge of AST< AMS/SAE specifications and experience in an ISO 9000 or IATF 16949: 2016 environment is an asset.
