WHERE YOU COME IN

We are looking for a Communications Coordinator to join our team at Make-A-Wish Canada. Reporting to the Sr Manager of Influence & Engagement, in this role you will be responsible for supporting the execution and monitoring of communications strategies to enhance the visibility and reputation of the organization.

This role involves creating public relations and marketing communications materials and assisting with administrative duties for influencer marketing and social media activities. The Communications Coordinator will also be responsible for tracking and reporting on the results of the team’s various campaigns at the national and regional levels. This role requires excellent organizational skills, creativity, and the ability to write compelling stories to engage the community and stakeholders.

This role is based out of Toronto and is a full-time, permanent, hybrid position.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

REPORTING AND TASK COORDINATION

  • Maintain organized records and documentation and support the overall task coordination and organization of communications activities.
  • Monitor and report on national and regional media relations and social media metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of strategies and campaigns.
  • Provide task coordination support for influencer partnerships and campaigns, including offering suggestions for appropriate influencers/content creators, contract administration, and reporting.
  • Participate in team meetings, contributing ideas and suggestions for upcoming projects.

MEDIA RELATIONS SUPPORT

  • Support building and maintaining media contacts by creating media lists and assist in the distribution of media materials.
  • Assist in developing select communication materials for national and regional initiatives, including drafting pitches, key messages and briefing documents.

CONTENT DEVELOPMENT AND STORY MANAGEMENT SUPPORT

  • Write and edit wish stories for the Foundation’s various communications and marketing channels, ensuring they are complete with publicity-approved, high-resolution photos and/or video, and available to all internal stakeholders.
  • Support the organization of multimedia content, including video and photo assets from events or wish stories in a content library.

EVENT COMMUNICATIONS SUPPORT

  • Assist with regional and corporate event communications as needed to enhance the organization’s visibility and reputation.
  • Act as communications and media support at select local events.
  • Liaise with and prepare wish families for event participation as required.

GENERAL

  • Ensure all communications are consistent with the organization’s brand and messaging guidelines.
  • Suggest new avenues for awareness initiatives.
  • Collaborate with development and mission staff, volunteers, and committees.
  • Other duties as assigned.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Degree or diploma in communications, marketing or public relations, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • 1-2 years of work experience in communications or related roles.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build solid relationships with journalists, internal stakeholders, external stakeholders, wish families, and more.
  • Strong writing skills with experience writing various communications materials.
  • Positive, can-do attitude and self-motivated with the ability to work well independently.
  • Strong organizational, time management, project management, problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy, including strong proofreading skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, familiarity with social media, Canva, Meltwater or other media monitoring tools; Salesforce and Dropbox is an asset.
  • Bilingual in French and English is an asset.
  • Experience in supporting fundraising professionals, and experience in issues management in relation to public relations and brand image, an asset.
  • A commitment to and passion for children’s health and charitable work. An understanding of and/or an interest in the nonprofit landscape is an asset.
  • A clear Criminal Background Check will be required.

YOUR WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Hybrid work environment (2 days in-office, 3 days remote per week) with occasional requirements to work outside of regular office hours.

Physical/Mental Effort

  • Works under pressure with multiple tight deadlines, demands, high volume workload, and dynamic/overlapping priorities.
  • May be subjective to sensitive situations regarding wish children and families.
