The Research Technician performs routine experiments and analyses in a laboratory using appropriate technical equipment and instruments; performs genomic-based laboratory tests according to standardized procedures, records and reports results; and coordinates clinical research studies by identifying and assessing research participants, distributing information, acting as a clinical resource, managing clinical data, conducting follow-up visits with participants, and attending meetings pertaining to the research program.

Duties:

  • Participates in clinical research projects collecting data from patients and/or participants in a study. Completes informed consent procedures with study participants.
  • Provides potential participants with study information.
  • Responsible for the initiation, organization, and carrying out of patient/participant follow-up.
  • Keeps detailed logs of all research related projects or activities. Assists in data management and data analysis.
  • Identifies research participants who may be eligible to participate in a clinical trial or research study.
  • Collects various forms of data pertaining to the research project or projects, which could include database information and/or hard files.
  • Conducts data analyses, interprets data, draws conclusions, and discusses with principal investigator.
  • Conducts literature searches.
  • Collaborates with other researchers or colleagues.
  • Constructs tests or assists in the construction of tests. Plans, sets up, and undertakes controlled experiments and assays.
  • Performs biochemical, genomic, or molecular tests and supports scientific investigators in research projects. Operates laboratory equipment, to include but not limited to centrifuges, titrators, pipetting machines, Nanodrop, Qubit, and pH meters.
  • Records, organizes, and analyzes data. Calculates test results and reports results to the supervisor.
  • Prepares various reports containing descriptive, analytical, and evaluative content that may be submitted for publication.
  • Conducts daily quality control and performs instrument calibration and adjustment prior to performing lab tests. Monitors and handles waste management and laboratory safety compliance
  • Compiles, enters, and graphs data and files reports.
  • Inspects and makes minor repairs to laboratory equipment, assesses lab needs to order and stocks supplies and orders equipment.
  • Attends various meetings pertaining to the clinical trial or research program and may present information.
  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.

Educational requirements:

Desired Skills:

Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in a Biological Science, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology Sociology or other health related field.

Equivalency & Substitution: Will accept 48 months equivalent experience in lieu of the Bachelor’s Degree.

Department Preferences:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a science related major: Biology, Biochemistry, or Physiology.
  • Experience in developing IRB protocols for human subject research.
  • Experience with genomic DNA isolations, RNA isolations, and quantification and quality assays for nucleic acids (Nanodrop and Qubit)

Certifications/Licenses: None

Skills:

  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures
  • Knowledge of the proper handling of chemicals and biohazardous materials
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations in different units of measurement
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite or other relevant programs
  • Detail oriented and excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing
  • Maintaining laboratory safety and compliance with EHS.
  • Organizational Skills for laboratory ordering and tracking inventory and for collecting and tracking specimens.
  • Ability to effective train student and communicate with collaborators’ laboratory staff
  • Developing and submitting IRB protocols
