The Metallurgical/Materials Science Engineer in this position is responsible for providing product
process and systems support for production processes at our facility in Delta
Ohio. This facility has a pickle line
hot dip galvanizing line
and slitter
and supplies the automotive
construction
energy
and agricultural markets. Responsibilities include applying metallurgical and engineering principles to the design
development and operation of processes and equipment while also contributing to new grade and supplier development. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated problem solver who demonstrates a strong work ethic and enjoys continuous learning to support meeting customer expectations.
Responsibilities- Support and promote safety initiatives.
- Develop material and processing parameters to efficiently achieve desired end-product properties and attributes based upon customer and industry specifications.
- Define and develop mechanical property and performance capabilities for hot rolled and coated products.
- Research
design and manage product/process capability and development and continuous improvement projects. - Provide metallurgical expertise to the purchasing
commercial
operating
material disposition
and customer claim groups. - Interpretation of industry (e.g. ASTM
EN/DIN
SAE) and customer specifications. - Interface with steel mills to ensure raw material enables correct final product characteristics.
- Prescribe metallurgical testing and interpret results for internal and external customer presentations.
- Support the metallurgical laboratory through test standard interpretation
procedural development
and test equipment selection due diligence. - Involvement in on-site meetings/tours with customers and vendors.
- Mentor junior metallurgists and laboratory technicians.
- Participate in claims and corrective action processes.
- Other duties as assigned.
Desired Experience- Advanced degree in Metallurgical Engineering/Materials Science Engineering or equivalent experience
- Multiple years of hot dip galvanizing experience
- Knowledge in statistics and/or advanced analytics a plus
- Advanced knowledge of ferrous metallurgy
- Advanced knowledge of steel making and downstream processing technologies
- Advanced knowledge of steel forming processes
- Strong computer skills
- Strong communication skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of welding a plus
