New Product Development Engineering Intern (Summer 2026)

This internship is a unique opportunity to gain new product development experience. This role will report to & be mentored by a Senior New Product Development Engineer within Worthington Enterprises' Building Products Innovation Team. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform hands-on mechanical experiments in a laboratory environment
  • Perform reviews of scientific or industry literature
  • Research and report back on developments in strategic technology areas, manufacturing techniques, and potential vendors
  • Reverse engineer competitive products, patents, and technology
  • Plan & develop new test methods or procedures with safety in mind
  • Collect test data, analyze test results, create written test reports
  • Coordinate product testing with external testing firms or laboratories when a specific test requires outside help
  • Participate in new product design reviews and brainstorming sessions
  • Design test fixtures, specimens, or prototypes using SolidWorks 2023 (2D drawings, 3D parts, & 3D assemblies)
  • Participate in consumer insight activities with customers, end users, or industry experts

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current junior or senior working towards a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (or related field)
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs
  • Must have reliable transportation; Mid-workday travel between laboratory location & corporate office location is required (3 miles), once daily maximum.
  • Prior experience performing research of available literature
  • Mechanical inclination and interest in hands-on problem solving, prototyping, and testing
  • Prior experience safely using hand tools required
  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA
  • Able to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences
  • Capable of handling multiple assignments at once
  • Able and interested in independent problem solving with moderate direction
  • 2D & 3D CAD software experience (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Prior engineering intern/coop experience required
