JOB SUMMARY

This position will lead the development and implementation of a new research facility dedicated to understanding the response of steel line pipe and oil country tubular good (OCTG) products to alternative energy environments, including high pressure hydrogen (H2) and carbon dioxide (CO2). The position will also oversee the research technologist(s) conducting tests in these specialized environments and analyze/report test results to various stakeholders. Accordingly, successful candidates must have experience establishing laboratory testing capabilities and must be familiar with the challenges of high pressure H2 and CO2. This position is critical to our future success, as we look to develop, qualify, and supply products suited for a rapidly expanding alternative energy market.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the development and implementation of a new research facility focused on the interaction of alternative energy environments, such as high pressure H2 and CO2, with steel line pipe and OCTG products (25%). Responsibilities include:
    • Scope and supply of lab equipment
    • Scope and execution of facility modifications
    • Lab equipment installation and commissioning
    • Testing procedure development
  • Design, implement, and oversee specialized dense phase CO2 corrosion testing plan. Analyze and present results to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Design high pressure H2 mechanical testing plan with input from program managers and research engineers. Analyze and present results to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Supervise research technologist(s) conducting high pressure CO2 corrosion tests and high pressure H2 mechanical tests.
  • Coordinate collaboration with research partners, including developing research proposals.
  • Engage with standards organizations to facilitate the development of relevant CO2 and H2 testing standards.
  • Perform other duties as they might be assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum M.Sc. in Metallurgical or Mechanical Engineering or related field. Preference will be given to candidates with a Ph.D.
  • Minimum 2 years (Research Engineer) or 5 years (Research Leader) experience establishing or leading a testing laboratory, including facility, equipment, and procedure development.
  • Minimum 1 year (Research Engineer) or 3 years (Research Leader) of experience testing in high pressure fluids, such as corrosion testing in dense CO2 or mechanical testing in H2.
  • Minimum 1 year (Research Engineer) or 3 years (Research Leader) of experience in mechanical testing, including tensile, fracture toughness, and fatigue testing.
  • Minimum 1 year (Research Engineer) or 3 years (Research Leader) of experience in materials characterization, including light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Strong English communication and presentation skills and the ability to work in a cross-functional team environment are required.
  • Knowledge of safety practices related to the utilization of high pressure and potentially hazardous gases is required.
  • Ability to travel to various company, partner, or customer facilities outside of the work location will be expected and the ability to freely travel between the US and Canada is required.
  • Knowledge of general line pipe and OCTG product standards and specifications (API, CSA, ASTM, NACE, ASME, etc.) is an asset.
  • Knowledge of standards and specifications related to high pressure H2 or CO2 service, such as ASME B31.12 and DNV-RP-F104 is an asset.
  • Knowledge of statistical design and analysis of experiments is an asset.
