Key Responsibilities (What You Are Doing)

  • Build and ship small, high-impact frontend features across Next.js applications for Hearst Autos brands
  • Develop reusable UI components within a shared design system to ensure consistency and scalability
  • Analyze and improve page performance, including optimizing data fetching patterns
  • Create internal tools that automate editorial workflows such as tagging, linking, and metadata management
  • Prototype and experiment with consumer-facing AI features and experiences
  • Support development of dashboards to track AI feature performance and user engagement metrics
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, and editorial teams to deliver high-quality, user-focused solutions

Qualifications (What We’re Looking For)

  • Strong foundation in JavaScript and TypeScript
  • Familiarity with Next.js or similar modern full-stack frameworks
  • Understanding of REST or GraphQL APIs and basic backend concepts
  • Experience or interest in AI/LLM integrations (e.g., OpenAI APIs, chat interfaces, prompt-driven features)
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted coding tools and modern developer workflows
  • Coursework or hands-on projects involving web application architecture
  • Demonstrated experience building side projects, hackathons, or portfolio work with end-to-end ownership
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate in a cross-functional, product-driven environment
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field
  • Based in New York City with the ability to work in-office 4 days per week

The base salary for this role is $20 per hour. The actual base pay offered is dependent upon many factors, such as: transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
