POSITION OVERVIEW

The Director of Elementary School Mathematics is an essential position that drives student achievement in Mathematics for KIPP Capital Region in grades K-4. In partnership with the Teaching and Learning team, this person will directly support the implementation of curriculum through observation and feedback, materials creation, data analysis and coaching, and the facilitation of targeted and well-planned adult learning experiences so that our teachers and leaders can provide excellent Mathematics instruction in all of our Elementary School classrooms.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Curriculum Design and Management
  • Support regional math initiatives based on student and teacher data to deliver consistent excellent Elementary School math instruction across KIPP Capital Region
  • Draw on content knowledge and understanding of effective math instructional practices to review curriculum documents, make recommendations and create materials as needed
  • Continually evaluate curriculum implementation through the establishment of enabling systems that monitor progress and demonstrate quantitative and qualitative academic growth
  • Attend and participate in weekly Teaching and Learning Team Meetings to provide reflections on curriculum implementation based in data
  • Oversee the administration of regional assessments for Elementary School students that yield meaningful data on student math skill and content progression
  • Analyze regional data in collaboration with regional leaders and school-based leaders to create action plans that promote student achievement
  • Collaborate with other KIPP regions and KIPP Foundation, to manage a system for sharing assessment data results and analyses with the greater KIPP Capital Region teacher and leader community.

School Support
  • Regularly observe instruction at multiple Elementary School sites within the region to identify best practices, spot and address curriculum design or implementation gaps, and determine professional development goals for math teachers and leaders for specific sub groups (grade-level, school site, region-wide, etc...)
  • Using a data-driven pedagogy, collaborate with school-based leaders and teachers to devise meaningful action steps that improve student outcomes
  • Support and coach school-based leaders in continually evaluating the effectiveness of the Math program overall

Professional Development for KIPP Capital Region
  • Provide targeted coaching and professional development experiences to Elementary School principals, coaches and select teachers to further content knowledge development and support curriculum implementation and innovation
  • Develop and facilitate regional professional development for teachers and leaders to ensure full implementation of curriculum and instructional initiatives across content areas and grade levels (with focus on Elementary School Mathematics)

  • Perform other duties outlined by the Senior Director of K-8 Academics and Chief Academic Officer.

  • Comply with all charter, federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including the NYS Department of Education, Department of Health, and NYS Office of Children and Family Services
  • Adhere to organization policies and procedures; promotes and supports mission, vision, and values, including developing and participating in internal surveys and data collection for continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • A bachelor's degree is required from an accredited college or university in Education, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university in Education, Mathematics, or a related field is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a classroom teacher, preferably in a charter or public school environment in NYS, with at least 3 of those years being in grades K-4.
  • 3 years of instructional leadership experience, preferably in Mathematics that required management of team and/or individuals, instructional coaching, facilitation of professional development, and the responsibility for student outcomes.
  • This position requires frequent travel between our schools throughout the Capital District area.
  • Prior experience working in schools and urban communities is preferred but not required.
  • Aptitude to create and work within an inclusive environment that honors and supports a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives.

  • Dexterity requires writing and operating standard office machines such as computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, phones, and calculators.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and move up to 20 pounds.

Salaries are determined using an equitable compensation scale that accounts for years of experience relevant to the role and longevity within the KIPP network. KIPP Capital Region will evaluate and determine the step/level a new hire will be placed within our graded salary scale at point of hire.
