Stevens Institute of Technology invites nominations and applications for the position of Director, Technology Commercialization and New Ventures . Reporting to the Vice Provost of Research and Innovation, the Director will lead the continuing development and exploitation of the University's intellectual property portfolio and will play a significant role in implementing the innovation and entrepreneurship components of the University’s Strategic Plan.

One of the central tenets of the Stevens mission is that solutions to many of today's critical societal problems can be addressed through advanced research and technology development/commercialization.

The successful candidate will have the demonstrated ability to lead and manage all aspects of the University's commercialization operations, including the development and implementation of a vision, strategy and plan to grow the intellectual property portfolio in alignment with the University's Strategic Plan. The Director will interact with faculty and researchers to influence the creation and protection of intellectual property that focuses directly on societal needs. It is critical for the candidate to have a comprehensive understanding of the academic environment and be able to work with faculty and researchers of all types, including students, to develop and exploit intellectual property through various endeavors.

The successful candidate will have a high level of knowledge of science and technology developments and demonstrated knowledge in one or more scientific disciplines as evidenced by an advanced science, engineering or other relevant degree. Five or more years of experience in licensing, technical entrepreneurship, corporate business development, and/or venture capital investments is required, and a PhD or MBA is preferred.

Specifically the Director will:

  • Manage the licensing function of the Office of Innovation & Entrepreneurship and serve as a liaison between the Office and the business and research community,

  • Develop strategies for licensing in focus areas based upon the University’s research (e.g., perform technology valuations, technology marketing and market assessments),

  • Manage the activities of the Stevens Venture Center by interacting with member companies and Entrepreneurs in Residence.

  • Assess the current patent portfolio of the University, and develop a management strategy for underexploited intellectual property and a strategy for future patent prosecution,

  • Advise faculty and students on the preparation of invention disclosures and provide guidance on intellectual property issues; engage with attorneys for new patent filings, analyses, responses to Office Actions and Restriction Requirements; comply with federal regulations requiring the submission of reports to federal sponsors

  • Manage the Intellectual Property Committee and the I& E Summer Scholars Research Program.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • This position requires access to technology that may be subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license. As a result, US citizenship or LPR (Lawful Permanent Residence) is required.

  • This position will engage in regular interactions with many university organizational functions such as the Office of General Counsel, Budget Office, Office of Sponsored Programs and the Office of Sponsored Accounting
