The Senior Director, GMAF Scientific Communications and Publications, will provide impeccable leadership to their assigned team for the strategic planning and execution of Scientific Communications, Medical Content, and scientific publication/ dissemination strategies. The role requires oversight of quality and compliance in alignment with SOPs, best publication practices, and industry standard. The Senior Director must maintain awareness of changes in healthcare and regulatory environments, benchmark against industry standards, and develop scientific plans and standard operating procedures (SOPs) aligned with business needs. Resource allocation and strategic alignment with business goals are critical, as is fostering strong relationships and maximizing financial and human resources within departmental budgets.

Tasks/Duties/Responsibilities

  • Scientific Communications: Drive the build of scientific/medical communications strategies across Cardiopulmonary TA that provide the foundation for medical communications with relevant external audiences. Lead a team of direct reports to operationalize and execute on the plan to ensure a unified narrative to external stakeholders.
  • Publications: Drive the generation and maintenance of the publications strategy. Ensure execution against the strategic plan including evidence dissemination activities. Be the face of Johnson & Johnson for publication committees, pub-related KOL engagements, academic institutions, and medical societies.
  • Medical Content: Serve as the scientific lead for the Cardiopulmonary TA by providing scientific, strategic, and operational expertise for the development of clear scientific and medical content for approved medicines and pipeline products. Collaborate with Medical Science Liaisons to develop quality field content. Oversee Continuing Medical Education (CME) and conference planning/execution activities.
  • People Leadership (Direct and Indirect): Provide people leadership to assigned direct reports including workload assignment and capacity management, professional development, and HR administrative responsibilities. Promote a team environment based in continuous learning and open exchange. Sponsor third-party vendors/consultants as necessary. Manage workload of assigned contractors/contingent labor according to contracted terms.
  • Influence and Thought Leadership: Represent J& J in internal and external forums on Scientific/Medical communications, publications, and content. Collaborate with global, regional, and local Medical Affairs teams, Commercial, R& D, Legal, Compliance, and IT teams to support the development of applicable capabilities and platforms.
  • Compliance: Ensure organizational compliance with legal, regulatory, and healthcare guidelines in all Scientific Communications, Publications, and Medical Content delivery activities.
  • Budget Management: Responsible for scientific communications, publication, and medical content budgets including funding prioritization in line with the strategic plan, tracking, accruals, spend reconciliation, and operational activities supporting the financial cycles (BP, JU, NU).

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree
  • A minimum of 10 years of healthcare industry experience, including 5+ years in pharmaceutical scientific communications or equivalent agency leadership.
  • Expertise in scientific/medical communications, writing, scientific research, and digital technologies is required.
  • Deep knowledge of Integrated Scientific Communications Strategy, Good Publication Practices (ISMPP), and ACCME guidelines is required.
  • Experience collaborating with sales, marketing, market access, clinical development, R& D, and field medical groups is required.
  • Strong strategic thinking, execution skills, business acumen, collaboration, problem-solving, and influencing capabilities are required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (including executive leadership interactions), client relationship management, and compliant creativity is required.
  • Excellence in external professional relationship management (e.g. Key Opinion Leaders, academic institutions, medical societies) is required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of people management experience is required.
  • Travel up to 25% domestic and international
  • People management experience required with 5 years of experience

The anticipated base pay range for this position is 193000 to 333500.

Additional Description for Pay Transparency:

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/performance year.
