Our Coastal/Waterfront Team and Projects
Our Coastal group specializes in providing planning and engineering services to address the challenges of coastal and waterfront storm damage on infrastructure. With climate change having a significant impact on numerous communities, we focus on preventative measures to ensure resilience. Our team of nearly 120 Land Use & Transportation professionals across our 17 regional offices is dedicated to supporting our coastal resiliency projects.
What will you be doing?
As a Waterfront Structures / Coastal Project Engineer, you will contribute to essential projects that enhance waterfront infrastructure and protect communities from coastal hazards. You will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative, sustainable solutions that meet project goals and client expectations.
• Technical Design: Develop designs and construction documents for coastal structures including seawalls, revetments, bulkheads, piers, docks, shoreline stabilization, fendering systems, pile-supported structures, and boat ramps.
• Engineering Analysis: Perform structural and geotechnical calculations, hydrodynamic analysis, and design of marine foundations and retaining structures.
• Drafting and Modeling: Prepare detailed drawings, plans, sections, and elevations using AutoCAD and Revit, ensuring designs meet project requirements and quality standards.
• Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Coordinate with civil, structural, geotechnical, and environmental engineers, as well as permitting specialists, to develop integrated design solutions.
• Construction Support: Assist project managers and construction teams during the construction phase, including reviewing submittals, responding to RFIs, and providing technical support for installation.
• Regulatory Compliance: Contribute to the preparation of permit applications, ensuring design compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
• Quality Assurance: Conduct self-reviews and participate in internal design reviews to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to company standards.
• Field Investigations: Support site visits and field investigations to gather data for design development and to verify existing conditions.
Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Coastal, or Geotechnical Engineering (Master’s degree preferred).
• Professional Engineer (PE) license (or ability to obtain).
• 5–10 years of experience in the design and analysis of coastal and waterfront infrastructure projects.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit for developing design drawings and models.
• Strong technical knowledge of coastal structures, marine foundations, and geotechnical design principles.
• Familiarity with design codes and standards applicable to waterfront and coastal projects.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in preparing permit applications and supporting regulatory reviews.
• Familiarity with hydrodynamic modeling software and wave/seiche analysis.
• Exposure to sustainable coastal design practices and shoreline resilience planning.
• Experience conducting inspections and providing field engineering support during construction.
