Emerson has an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as the Manager of State and Local Tax Indirect Taxes! Based in either Eden Prairie, MN or St. Louis, MO, you will be responsible for handling the administration, review and compliance of state and local sales/use and property tax obligations. Duties include identifying, researching, and assisting in implementing methods to minimize the Company’s tax posture. Moreover, it defends the Company and its subsidiaries when challenged by tax authorities. The role involves managing multiple projects at once, and building strong relationships inside and outside Emerson!

In this Role, Your Responsibilities Will Be:

  • Review and lead state and local sales/use tax return compliance for multiple businesses, ensuring timely and accurate filing.
  • Plan and coordinate the filing of personal property tax returns for plant facilities and sales offices in assigned states. Ensure timely payment of both real and personal property tax payments.
  • Handle and oversee sales/use and property tax audits, working closely with division personnel and taxing authorities to achieve lowest tax liability permissible. May include research, protest, and appeal of the Company’s position before administrative and judicial authorities.
  • Provide legal research, consultation, and opinions regarding sales/use and property tax issues to the operating business units.
  • Keep informed regarding pending industry changes, trends, and best practices and assess the potential impact of these changes on organizational processes. Communicate these changes to leadership groups in the Company that may be impacted.
  • Act as Tax Department Liaison to outside consultants engaged to identify savings opportunities in the sales/use and property tax areas.
  • Provide direction and support to the tax team in transforming data and automating processes related to the sales/use and property tax compliance.
  • Assist in due diligence of prospective acquisition targets or divestitures.
  • Prepare and provide sales tax training presentations for operating personnel.
  • Serve as a lead for coordinating system testing related to Oracle and Vertex patches, enhancements, and upgrades.
  • Provide leadership and career guidance for the development and motivation of staff.

For This Role, You Will Need:
  • Bachelor of Science or Arts Degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 6-8 years’ experience in the state and local tax department of a multi-state company or a major accounting firm
Preferred Qualifications that Set You Apart:
  • Masters Degree in Tax
  • CPA or CMI

Our compensation philosophy is simple: we pay a competitive base salary, within the local market in which we operate, and reward performance during our annual merit review process. The salary range for this role is $117, 000 - $145, 000 annually, commensurate with the skills, talent, capabilities, and experience each candidate brings to a role.
